Hi there,

has anyone worked out any simple way of having one control/knob that can change the shape of the release stage of an envelope evenly from an exponential through to a logarithmic curve? (ie. convex to concave)

I have managed to bodge together a few ways of doing this using LFO's and bundles of other modules, but I'm sure there must be a simpler and cheaper way... Shocked or maybe there isn't?

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the release time... I'm talking about an extra control to change the shape, or way that the envelope fades out within the set release time. Nothing as simple as just using the modulation envelopes, I don't think, although maybe I have missed something obvious. I'm trying to avoid the mod envs anyway because the attack phase is not quick enough for drums.

Maybe something like this ?

I am at work so can't check whether Jan's patch does exactly what I think you want. Essentually I think you wish, like me, that the decay envelope module had a 'shape' control.. (?), like on the drum module.

What I tend to do is to set the ADR to linear decay and then use a static shaper module to change the chape of the control signal. this will obviously only give you four different shapes (two exp, two inverted exp), but I am sure combining a few of these and a crossfader would give you your 'one knob' solution...

Thanks Jan... close, but no cigar. Very Happy The shaping sounds quite right, but the release time changes with the shape, so it's longer at one extreme and considerably shorter at the other.

I made a few adjustments to try and stop that from happening and have succeeded to a degree... now the release time seems to get a bit longer at the central (linear?) position, so it's still not quite right. I have attached the slightly modified patch below. This is somewhat like the attempt that I previously made and I was hoping for something simpler, but maybe there isn't a better way?

Karl, actually it is for drum sounds, well done... your idea sounds good for control signals, but how does it work on an envelope stage?

Anyone else with any bright ideas, please let me know. Very Happy

you could run the audio signal through the multiplier and use the control signal to modify it.

the attached may work although i pathced it 'blind'...

Thanks Karl... I swapped the static shaper module with the ShapeExp module and used a morph knob to change the shape and adjust the release time to keep it more constant. It works pretty well, but only changes the shape from linear to exponential... or is it logarhithmic, not from log to exp.

I know I'm being pedantic, but I'm really after a solution for a circuit in a (re-usable) patch, ie. I want the max possible variation in shape control for max possible sounds.

I may just have to stick with what I had originally, or a combination of these examples - I just thought there must have been a simpler way!

Any more ideas anyone?

i only used the static shaper as its the only one with an inverted exp...

the attached uses two static shapers and an xfade which I guess is the only way to get 1 button control using my method...

Thanks again Karl,

Now I see what you mean Embarassed A very nice and simple solution... that's what I was after! It seems to work pretty much as expected and the release time seems to remain fairly constant too. Great, thanks. Very Happy
