Very nice. On my G2X I increasted the polyphony and it gets some very rich sounds. Beautiful.
We've recently had two Indian music submissions here; this one from Brazil and one from Sweden. _________________ --Howard

for the curious modellers.... |
|
|
sites i stepped doing some research that really worth taking a look....
karnatik site:
http://www.karnatik.com/shrutibox.shtml
the samples (played reasonably well and for a long period, of the real instrument)
home made instrument
http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/tamboura.htm
nice site with shows how to build it with cheap parts, but the samples show a perceivable plucking that diminishes the droning feeling.
(with sounds)
hardware modules
http://www.cyndustries.com/modules_tabla.cfm
modular synth part built specifically to emulate this instrument
(with sounds)
a few things to consider emulating the instrument that weren´t mentioned:
the real instrument is excited by plucking (which ideally should be difficult to be perceived as soon it starts to drone. (holding the string with 2 fingers and pulling it up like said in the home made site.
using modular aproach, there are extra options that surely can make this more interesting that are string exciting by bowing effect (maybe using rndtrig module to insert pulses each time the bow slips in the string) or
by exciting by injecting an oscillating wave at a ressonant freq in the string osc which in the real case is impossible unless someone gently touches the string with a cell phone ringing in vibracall mode ( and the freqs are compatible)
my aproach was to excite using noise with a slow attack
another difficult task is the fact that the real instrument uses fretting on purpose near the end of the string which removes less vibrating energy but is not possible to reach this point because i have used the strg osc as a whole, maybe if using several delay modules for recreating it makes possible the fact that some small oscillations at delay line ends could be used to add this distortion.
there are two strings tuned to the same note in the real one and in the real case when plucking one of two strings in paralel what happens is that energy exchanges back and forth between them (at a rate governed by slightly detuning them).... for this it should be interesting to link those str oscs to allow the vibration exchange like the real case.
beware of virtual modular sound construction.... its very addictive.... |

Have you heard "Journey in Satchindananda" by Alice Coltrane? (wife of John).
It's got some beautiful tampura drones set to jazz
I'd love to own the real thing _________________ ACHTUNG!

The tambura is an indian classical string instrument, the evolution of the tambur (an instrument close to the tambura but of smaller size).
In the XIXth century, this instrument was smaller, because its main resonator is made of a pumkin and big pumkins were not available in India. The neck of the instrument is hollow and is used as a "central" resonator.
Its body is carved out of tun, (Cedrela tuna) or teak wood.
But the special drone effect results from the flat bridge or jawari, which increases enormously the spectrum of the notes and links the strings' vibration.
Main accompaniment for the Indian classical music's singer, the tambura is played on open strings. The 4 strings are tuned PA SA SA SA, (dominant, tonic, tonic, tonic of the lower octave).
By a extremely precise tuning, a tembura can play the raga scale with it's harmonics |

Indeed.
(You should see the colour of the shades that come with the sitar!) _________________ ACHTUNG!
