you could do it manually if that is what you mean by natural. try triggering the gate of your 'glitch' sound with a knob-assigned clock sync'd lfo. i think your initial idea is interesting though.

You're using the wrong tools to achieve this effect, sure it's an interesting exercise but you're just not going to get the funky results you get by doing it by hand, aseembling PIECE by PIECE Smile

That's why aphexs edits stand head and shoulders above the average breakcore dross. There's no easy way out Wink

try creating a triggering system in the g2 for NI's battery that does that "piece by piece" method of working with the way it triggers short little bleeps and blurps at high speeds. at least you could do all that then copy and paste together what you like for shortcut purposes perhaps?

but yeah, you're right steve.

here's a very basic retrigger effect. turn the decay knob on the env to make the effect. it's more autechre style than aphex, but it may be what you're after.

perhaps you speak of granular synthesis?
These effects are utilized extensively for stuttering effects...
Just a thought

I don't have any proof that Aphex uses an MPC, but after I got an MPC1k I begain to suspect a lot of aphex twin's retriggering effects may just be excessive use of the 'note repeat' function (which is present on all models I believe), though I imagine Bucephalus Bouncing Ball might have been something else...

there are tons of methods for generating the same kinds of rolls.

software/vst: buffer override, dblue glitch, beat repeat (in ableton), and several others which do a kind of buffer resampling

in a wave editor, you'd just chop little bits together, maybe put a volume envelope on it or some pitch shifting to make it sound more/less natural.

you can tweak delays to do the same kind of thing, by putting the feedback very high on a transient and then futzing with the delay time.

the envelope retrigger effect tends to sound more computer-y, algorithmic, like autechre and richard devine.

there's something else where you can "scrub" through a waveform (if you use something like reaktor, max/msp, grm freezer, a bunch of freeware loopers or ableton's simpler plugin). you make the window large enough to see a small part of the beat and then move over a transient, it does something like that.

another free vst to check out is called "livecut".

but steve is right, to do aphex style edits, you're most likely looking at doing it by hand, in a wave editor like cubase.

edit: and hardware. older hardware can be tweaked to do some of these rolls.

If we're just listing ways of doing this, you can also acheive it using logic audio's environment, using the midi delay and arpeggiator.
