No Labels No Musics 2 ~ Field Rec Composition Project Subject description: Call for Participation |
|
|
Welcome to the 2nd Annual
electro-music[/color]
Field Recording Composition Project
No Labels No Musics 2
The electro-music Field Recording Project challenges musicians to create original compositions from the existing field rec archive. Participants will be limited to field recordings as the only sound sources, but can chop, mutilate, and process with effects to the heart's desire.
Please use only the field recordings in the archive HERE to construct your pieces. This composition project is also about adding more field recs to our archive for everyone, and for more events like this in the future. If you have a recording that you would like to use outside of the archive, please upload it to the archive so it is then equally accessible for everyone. Most of the time no two people will use a field rec the same way, especially if processed. It is very interesting in the end when to hear all the differences/similarities when everyone has access to the same source material database.
Original compositions should be anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes in length. Tracks need to be in .wav or flac format.
When you are finished, you can upload your track to sendspace, soundcloud, your website, or wherever, and email the link to João at editoradoporto@gmail.com
Do not upload your track here.
Please supply the following information for your track:
Name:
Track Title:
Notes: (optional)
Deadline for submission is Sunday July 31st, 2011. Project will be published at EdP netlabel with João Ricardo. Thanks João!
This is NOT a competition or a contest. This is simply a creative project to explore soundscapes and designs to see what can be carved from this source material.
Please post any questions about the project here in the thread.
Good luck, have fun, and pleasant composing!

Cool idea.
I have been rummaging through, and
there are some worthwhile sounds in this library.
I'll have a go at this too;
most likely as a collaboration. |

Me too!
I'm looking at it as a challenge. Can I make something musical out of a bunch of random noises? _________________ http://soundcloud.com/Mefistophelees |

I have a question about the rules.
If I process samples through a synth I'll turn the oscillators down as that's adding sounds not from the archive.
What about filter resonance? I assume thats OK as it's processing.
What if I have the resonance turned up enough you can't even hear the original signal? Is that "cheating"?
Alternatively, if I use something like this should I just sample it and add it to the archive?
The reason I ask is I was messing around processing rain through an MS-20 to get percussive sounds but inadvertently discovered a way to get a good bass sample (which I haven't been able to get yet otherwise). _________________ http://soundcloud.com/Mefistophelees |

Gonna be a bit strange and answer myself...
In answer to the question I asked, I'm taking the approach that the source material must be present in some way, even if it's completely changed. To test this, remove the original sound and see what different it makes. If there's no difference then the sound is not from the archive and either can't be used or should be submitted as a recording.
However...
The question I had has lead me to a whole other take on this project.
I'm working on the general idea of taking bits of field recordings from the archive and making them into music. I'm processing the sounds but you still probably be able to mostly identify them.
However, I think you can also do something completely different.
For example: How about zooming right into the recordings, taking out individual waveforms, then feeding them into synths as substitute waveforms. You'll end up what sounds like synths but isn't, it'll be a combination. The aim would be in effect to use the sounds from the archive as a starting point only and make music that sounds absolutely nothing like it.
I'm not sure that this is within the spirit of this project (or is it???). Either way, I might give it a try. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/Mefistophelees |

The spirit of this project is to have fun, which I think applies to your experimenting!
There will always be gray areas, where little gray aliens potter about... Use your good judgement. Some times limiting the possibilities makes us more creative, and if something falls way outside the intended goal of this project, there is always the chance that you can use it on something else. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

I'm working on it!
Been a bit of trial and error but I've finally managed to turn a Fermilab high pitched buzzing sound into strings ...kinda-sorta.
It's been fun, I've had to learn a lot about sound processing and how to work a Kurzweil - which are *really* good and go surprisingly cheap on eBay!
More work to do though... _________________ http://soundcloud.com/Mefistophelees |
