I have successfully written a random note sequencer using VB.NET. It accesses my MIDIsport 2x2 and can send MIDI messages through it. The program uses winmm.dll which is already installed on XP and probably other versions of Windows. I am using the free Visual Basic Express Edition 2008.

I've included an MP3 demonstration sound file which uses two FPGA FM Bell synths. The sequencer generates random pitches for the bells, including 96ET microtonal offsets. It also sends 3 CC messages to each synth to modify it's timbre. The two synths are on different MIDI channels.
