Hi, Someone I know needs a voice chip for a Roland Juno 106 synth from the 1980s. Where can he get one and instructions on how to install it?

Thanks a bunch!

Les

Hi Inventor:
What chip are you looking for?
The most common failure in the Juno-106 is the 80017A (VCF/VCA), if you
looking for one of those, try to decoating it. Just bath it in acetone for 24
hours or more, then take away all the black coat with some tweezers.
I did that with 3 chips of mine and 2 get working again, and the third works
but not as it should (I think I overheated when desoldered). I did the same
to all my working chips to ensure they not fail in the future.
If that didn't work, you can search in eBay for an original chip.
Also there are people cloning the chips. This site have clones of the 80017A
and the 5534A waveshaper (the other possible failure):

Hope this help.

I can vouch for the Analog Renaissance chips. Had two 80017a's installed and it worked out great, they sounded good.

But I should have just had all of them replaced that way because I mangled some of the leads when desoldering the next chip to fail and currently don't have a working 106. I should have practiced a bit more before deciding to come out of soldering retirement on a IC desoldering job.

Yeah, soldering takes practice - but not too much though. I recommend practicing on wire sculptures, cheap easy and artful if you are creative. Good enough practice if you are not anyway.
