I'm looking to buy the best VSTi (or VSTis) for Trance music, specifically. What would you guys recommend? Also, if possible, I would like to know if I could use my keyboard to control any of these VSTis (because I've been using Ableton Live's preset sounds and haven't found a good use for my Alesis Micron, unfortunately). I might add that I got some hefty discounts on some Native Instruments VSTis for buying one of their products...

Difficult to say... some good candidates IMHO are (free) Synth1 and Superwave P8, and (pay) ReFX Vanguard and Nexus, Tone2 Gladiator, Waldorf Largo, FAW Circle. I'm sure others will post their favorites.

I can in Reaper, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to in Ableton as well.

Well NI have Massive which would do you well for a wide variety of sounds.

Also Rob Papens "Albino 3" would be worth looking at.

Both offer free demos as far as I can remember so you can try before buying.

Cheers

Andy

Ah. By this, I meant that I'm a bit disappointed with the sounds themselves in the Micron, because they don't really fit well with what I'm looking for.

Massive has a nice modulation sequencer thingy that (from what I have heard of 'trance') would come in very handy. Massive is awesome. HUGE range of sounds. If you can try a demo definitely check it out, otherwise check for torrents! It's out there.. I don't see the harm if you are looking for something to buy. Peace and good luck.

What apart from the fact that pirated software usually provides backdoor mechanisms into your computer for hackers and is of course illegal.

ableton live has a 8 osc saw instrument. n.i. massive is great. rop papen synths will do the job too. the korg klc intruments like mono-poly would be fine as well. arturia too.
