So, anyone else immediately disable Dashboard after Tiger upgrade (not just hide it away)?

My iMac G5 512MB was down 100 megs with Dashboard running, even after I disabled all the widget features, so I did a google search and came up with this:
http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2005/08/disabledashboard/forums.html

The widgets are a cool idea, if they could be efficiently pulled off (and turned off for that matter).

Just my 2 cents. Wink

I dunno, but I too can live without gimmicks such as dashboard. It's amazing too how much your Mac speeds up with added memory. I'm only on 512mb here- I wish I had double this.

Safari's a big memory hog too. Often I have to empty Safari's cache in order to stop the spinning beachball of death appearing :-/

Does anyone here use Tiger with an old G4? How fast does it run? (10.3.9- which is what I'm on, is much faster than previous versions of OSX).

I have a g4 ( dual 1.25) with 2 gigs of ram. I am running with a very small set of widgets activated. My new g5 ( soon to come ) will have 4 gigs.

It isn´t a big deal to disable Dashboard.

In terminal type:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

You must restart the Dock after this:

killall Dock

This is in fact just a "switch". You can get Dashboard back by typing this in terminal:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO

The dock must be restarted yet again: killall Dock

Uh.. right.. the same recipe is at: http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2005/08/disabledashboard/forums.html
and dozens of other places.

...and what about this one? Shocked
Quote:
This widget displays a static half-size image from the Mount St. Helens webcam, taken from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The Observatory and VolcanoCam are located at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, about five miles from the volcano. You will be looking approximately south-southeast across the North Fork Toutle River Valley. The VolcanoCam image automatically updates approximately every five minutes. Click the button below the image to go to to the webcam's official site and the full-size image.
