DS7 Stuff |

Anyone feel like explaining to a noob how to make about 5 ds7s and connect them so I have a basic electronic drumset? (where to get PCBs or PCB layouts and all other documentation would be nice, I found that schematic, but dont know how to make that to a pcb). Even advice on stripboarding it would be nice.

Thanks! I got another question, kind of off topic, but would it be hard to make a drum synth that contains some memory that would store samples, and would play those samples when triggered? (i guess this is more of a digital synth, but I would still want the potentiometers to tweak pitch and all that stuff) |

I've built a 16 channel eDrum Trigger-to-MIDI box before (edrum.info), and several analogue drum modules (including two DS7's.) The eDrum and DS7 are both great projects. If you're new, the DS7 is a good one. The eDrum was my first electronics diy project, and it was not easy at all -- but I finished it eventually. You can order DS7 boards from Marc Bareille or check out the thread here for some PCB layouts (I made the LM13700 version.)
I wouldn't mess with sampled drum modules - maybe just get a sampler w/multiple outs (not sure what model would be best), gut it, and install it in the same case with some analogue filters, etc? That could be cool. I really love the Alesis SR-16, as far as cheap sample-based drum machines go. Right now I have a rackmount Ensoniq Mirage, which is kind of an archaic beast -- but it's the "digital component" of my rig, which I use for any kind of drum/percussion sampling that needs to happen. Gets the late 80's EBM/Skinny Puppy grit that I like. Or you could find toy keyboards/drumsets and try to gut and rewire those for trigger inputs or MIDI...
That said, there is also the Alpha Drum... I'll attach the documentation I have. It was a DIY rom-sampled drum module, I think. I haven't looked into it much, but would love to build one at some point.
