I've been producing in on an old stereo system from the 80's with a single big old speaker for a long time, but now I'm starting to get more of a desktop setup, and I'd like to get some real studio monitors.

My room is fairly big, and I usually work on experimental/ambient/breakcore type music. I have only one real requirement, and that is that the monitors don't bring out the bass too much. I really hatehatehate how car audio systems make all of the music I own sound, the bass always drowns everything out. I can see it being good for dance music, but that's not really what I listen to.

Also louder is better, I'll probably be using the monitors for listening to music with friends as well as producing.

The absolute max I'm willing to spend is probably 500 dollars, but cheaper would be better. How good are those 99$ M-audios? And the lower end KRKs?

Thanks
Scott
