Screen Printing for front panels? Subject description: Would anyone here want do some printing or know of anyone? |
 |
|
I've been looking-- not too hard -- for a screen printer local to NYC who can screen aluminum panels and not just t-shirts-- without much luck.
Does anyone here know of a service or crafts-person?
I'm not looking for a screen service-- I have no experience screen-printing and I don't have time to learn right now. But I have a bunch of panel designs ready that I'd like to get started on.. |

you should talk to a sign shop, they routinely use epoxy inks for permanent signage. only caveat is they're used to much bigger prints of course, and looser tolerances. if you laid a bunch out together, it may be cheaper to print a huge sheet, then shear them after they've dried. there are online signage places that seem to be good too, but it might be better in your case to have more direct communication wth the shop.
there's also Metalphoto of Cincinnati, where I and most all Euro ppl at least get panels, afaik they do offer silkscreen, but i could be wrong. if you panelize the designs, will be cheaper.it's not much more expensive to have them cut all holes too fwiw.
you could always organize group buys to make it more affordable as well- If you're doing Buchla clones, I suspect you won't have any trouble getting a group together |

Topp,
Thanks very much for these suggestions.
I have stopped in a few sign shops around town-- but I mostly get incredulous looks when I show them how small the print is. A few have offered to try though, and I might just give it a shot.
I've heard of Metalphoto from several people, but I was under the impression that they won't do very small runs. I could organize a group buy, but I'd rather not become even more of a pariah among the vintage Buchla community. Maybe I'll inquire w Metalphoto again.
There's gotta be some smaller scale screen printer people around who can help. I must be looking in the wrong places.

they'll do as small of a run as you need. you just have to pay tooling, whcih makes the panels very expensive at 1-offs or whatnot.. thats why I suggest group buys. as long as you keep the name off the panels, I don't think any of the buchla club would take issue, but not certain. |

How many are you looking to get? And only 1 color? I have done my own with good luck. |

Fonik did a metalphoto panel of the patchell vocal filter. You may want to ask him where he had the panel manufactured. I think he posted somewhere in the vocal filter thread where this was actually done. |

What about alternatives, such as vinyl overlays? They're cheap, and if they get scratched up or anything, you just stick another one on. _________________ The Phoenix Vertigo is my Electronic alias. Check out my songs on soundcloud : http://soundcloud.com/charles-stieg/ |

Not sure if they do screen printing, but there´s a small shop at the Oriente underground station, just below the mall. They do laser printing and engraving on everything, like advertising gifts and, so I was told, metal front panels. Just bring a file with the graphics etc.
I´ve seen those shops everywhere, some will only print over their own mugs and lighters, though.
Good luck. |

i just found out that schaeffer (front panel designer) do metalphoto's too. you will have to send them the fpd and a pdf via email and check the price this way. will try that soon.
