I need to buy a laptop for using "Logic" and "Ableton Live" but I’ve heard that the newest mac book pro, they have problem with running certain plug-ins like Spectrasonics (Stylus, Atmosphere, etc)

I run Live on my MacBook Pro 15 inch, and it works OK (I've encountered sound glitches right after startup twice - hopefully nothing reoccurring). Other apps have problems though, and all of the utilities I like haven't been ported to Intel. Don't know anything about those plugins.

I just got my black Macbook. It runs Logic just fine. No sound glitches so far.
That said, I have several utilities and shit that are not compiled for Intel. All these run just fine, but I wouldn´t rely on Rosetta for audio stuff.
The 5400 rpm drive is a tad slow but I am getting a 7200 rpm drive now. The only "bad" thing about the macbook is that they haven´t added a FW800 port.

What kind of improvements could I expect if I upgraded to a 7200 rpm drive? Is it only related to the amount of simultaneous audio files being read from disc?

All disk use would be a bit faster. This includes reading samples off the disk, handling VM swap files and what have you. The disk bus in an uncapped SATA so it doesn´t make much sense to stick to the 5400 rpm drive. 7200 rpm SATA drives are still a bit expensive but give it a few months or so and the prices will drop.

I'm trying to make the same decision, I just chose Mac over PC only because I heard the drivers weren't going to be ready in time for the udated software in or around september/the fall. I'm going all out and getting the Macbook Pro 17" because of the FireWire800 it has extra that the others don't. That's pretty much the only reason I'm choosing it over any other, and I'll still probably upgrade it a little cause 5400rpm is onl decent IMO. Anywho... I'll be running ableton, cubase and reason off of it and so far from what I've seen it works just fine.
