Davies 1900 clones Subject description: looking for knobs? |
 |
|
Hi
While shopping for knobs (amongst everything else for my future modular!), I saw these Davies 1900 clones:
http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=727
Has anybody tried them?
A multicolor serge-like synth, that would be a real funstation!! |

| I picked up a pair each in white, gray, black. Very nice. These are 1/4" shaft with a set screw. Compared to old Davies knobs on my Serge (those are 1/8" shaft - anybody have a source?) the indentations on the sides are not as prominent or well defined but I only mention that in case you are super picky about those things. While we're at it, Davies knobs from the '70s and early 80's have a slightly thicker line on top and it's a slightly warmer white. Was that a geeky enough answer for you? |

yes, vintage knobs are warmer, 'cause they're analog (and, you know, vintage)... that's why they cost more.
heh heh |

Thanks BananaPlug!
A.b.o.z., knob diameter of the original Davies is 1/2" at the base and 15/32 at the top. |

I just bought a hundred of the black ones. They are nice, but probably not as nice as the fancy true Davies 1900Hs. There's no collar inside the knob, which makes attaching them to a pot shaft just a bit trickier than with knobs that do. You have to lift it just a bit when tightening the screw, otherwise the knob will rub against the nut that holds the pot to the panel.
Still, for the price, they are definitely worth it. I will order another 100 next paycheck.

hey, i got 50 of those 1900 clones- they are really nice, i noticed though that the 'flutes' don't seem as deep as the davies knobs. but high quality nonetheless.

| i do have some of these 1900-h clones too, and the most obvious difference to me (as to others) is the depth of the "cut" of the flutes/ridges in the knob. the reason i noticed this? i was trying the davies knobs out on my doepfer modules, which look pretty fantastic. however, doepfer pots have some resistance and my fingers were kinda slipping around on the clones, which was totally impractical (the soft-touch rean knobs are *far* better functionally on doepfer modules). |

Grant uses Davies 1900 knobs for the blue Wiard 1200 series?! I just swapped one of these to my DIY modules and think it possibly doesn't cover the hex nut of the pot (Spectrol 149) sufficiently. Does it work fine for you?
The Alcoswitch (PKES60B1/4) I used to buy are burdening my budget too much. Davies clones are much more economic. |
