74hc4046 to replace ceramic resonator? (variable clock)

I've seen people replacing ceramic resonators with a lt1799...

...but has anybody here tried to do the same thing with a 74hc4046?
It is a vco with pll and has a maximum freq. of 12mhz.
It would need a few more parts than a lt1799, but it is a very common and cheap part that is available in a thrue-hole packadge.

...since it's a vco it would be easy to mix a LFO into the control voltage...

yes I've done that for the Ek2100. I used a standard CD4046, which is a bit slower, and only later
realized I could have used a 74HC4046. It does run on 5V so I might replace it at a later time.

Nice.
I like the Idea of having a vco as a clock + clock dividers.
...I have some cd4046 here too, but I guess I will wait until I can get my hands on a 74hc4046 until I try it...I want to substitute a 4Mhz clock and the max. freq.@5v is only 1Mhz (or 1.2mhz...depending on which datasheet you are reading...)
