I am a total WinPIC800 noob... read on.

I have a new PIC16F628A controller board from Futurlec which comes with the parallel port programming board/cable. I have followed the wierdly worded instructions and I'm unable to communicate with the PIC board.

I have wired a 5 volt regulated supply to the supply terminals and have plugged the ribbon cable into the yellow programming socket. The other end of the cable is plugged into the PSPI socket on the parallel port board as directed in the PDF. I set the configuration as shown for the external clock.

The red LED on the PIC board is on.

I load the hex file I want to send (and the data shows in the WinPIC800 window).

When I try to send the hex data to the PIC, I see a window with:

detected -> unknown
Device Erased.: Ok
[ Verifying during programming ]
Programming Code ...: 2048 word

And an error box which says:
ERROR -> Writing address 0x000000
written 0x3007 Read: 0x0000

Using the Hardware Test button:
ERROR -> Hardware is not responding

I had manually selected the PIC type as PIC16F628A

I'm running on Windows 98SE

Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

For anyone else who may have this problem - the WinPIC800 program I downloaded from Futurlec was too old. It claimed to support the PCI16F628A, but I couldn't get it to work. There is a new version on the WinPIC800 site (version 3.63c) - this works. However, there is information which is required for the "hardware setting" that wasn't included in any of the docs I got on the CD shipped with the contoller. The hardware setting for this board should be "ETT-LOW VPP ICSP". The default is GTP-USB, so this must be changed manually.
