I've recently been wondering about a couple of synthesizers that have graced both the silver screen and TV, and where they might be today.

First would be Mickey Dolenz' modular Moog, played on the Monkees' single "Daily Nightly" (see the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfmQ6w7RW7k). If I'm following the history correctly, Mickey passed it along to Bobby Sherman, and it was last seen was in the hands of Eddy Grant during the 80s. Does anyone know where it ended up?

The other is the ARP used in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Dressed up in its custom cabinetry and manned by Philip Dodds, it looked a great deal larger and more elaborate than the actual model typically is. Was this a loaner from the ARP company, or was it a privately owned unit? Most importantly, where is it today?

Looking forward to your answers, thank you.

I can't read Matrixsynth at work (it's on Blogspot which is blocked) but the following URL appeared last year:

http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2009/10/mint-arp-2500-synthesizer-for-sale-and.html

which would explain where it was last year.

I have no idea if Bobby Sherman still has Mickey Dolenz' Moog.

Looks like we're on the right track. Your link led me further to:

http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2008/03/close-encounters-arp-2500-for-sale.html

which picks up a bit of the instrument's history since CE3K and includes a wonderfully amusing pic of Spielberg and Dodds pecking away at the ARP. Thanks very much for the lead.

I have an email in to the Bobby Sherman fan club to see if anyone there - or Bobby himself - can answer the Moog question. BTW, do you know what singer/actor Sherman is up to now? He's a sheriff in California.

I suppose it beats trying to land an acting role as a sherriff. And no, I didn't know that.

Glad to help. If you do find out about the Moog, post it here, thanks.
