TR-66 triggers Subject description: Beat box triggering sequencing |

I looked and looked but didn't see anthything obviously applicable so here's my question:
Has anyone tried adding triggers to an old beat box to access the individual drum sounds? I'd like to add separate buttons to play each sound and external trigger inputs for sequencing. |

I am not a DIYer, but your question got me curious. Do you have the service manual yet? http://elektrotanya.com/roland_tr-66.pdf/download.html
If not, that might help.
Also, you might want to get in touch with this person: http://www.em411.com/show/blog/8011/0/SynC_Modular_now_freeware.html. Evidently all the samples of a circuit bent TR-66 come from this person. (Note gear list).
Hope this helps.

Wow, I couldn't find the service notes, only the user guide. I'll get that and see if I can think of something. I did find a site that had someone starting to hack at the TR-66. looks like all the individual sound outputs are labeled inside and there are even trimmers for tweeking the pitch and decay. I'll post the link when I find it again. It does look hopeful that I could turn this beat box into a legitimate drum machine. |

Yeah--it took a little searching to find the service notes, but as I said you got my curiosity up (and it was more fun than doing a word search puzzle). I had fun reading it. Best wishes with the project.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"If at first your google search doesn't succeed, try it again another day!
Maybe there are others out there, too. (But, you probably have enough ideas already to get started. Someday you will have your own contributibution for others discover.)

Hey, that's me! Cool to see others interested in this old beast.
My TR-66 mods have gone on the back burner as I've been busy building my own stuff, but I'll share what my probing so far has found...
I think that the connections I first thought were individual outputs are actually the triggers. I think the two connections on the front (facing the panel) labelled "O" and "G" are the mixed output and its associated ground (based on probing with an alligator clip attached to a mixer input on another device- probing the other ones I thought were outputs just made a tick, the "O" made rhythmic noises that went with the beat). I believe the middle board is where the triggers are generated, based on probing the group of wires coming off the back of it with a meter.
That's all the further info I have I'm afraid, hope it helps... _________________ the synthgeek pages - samples & stuff

Yeah, they are the trigger inputs for each voice, the service notes have instructions for triggering individual sounds for calibration but the schematic doesn't specify the cap value for the test trigger. Each voice can also be triggered by touching a probe and then probing the trigger input. Probably dangerous tho. |
