well I guess it suggests that the BBD needs to run off a slightly lower voltage than the Clock.

If you look at the schematic Vgg goes into the Gate of a JFET in between each stage, I am just guess ...

If you look at the original datasheet

it says it gives out 14/15ths the supply voltage to power the BBD

you can almost drop in any OTA or VCA IC in some circuits and in others its a little tougher.

yes that will also work , although you will experience a voltage drop of around .6 which wont really be noticeable with an envelope generator > VCO
