A used Digitech Studio Quad might be a good option. They're cheap but still really capable. For about $100 you get 4 channels of multi-effects. Not much on the knobs, though.

It's really hard to argue with Ableton for most "traditional" genres of electronic music. It's worth getting the free trial either way.

The Roland PG programmers (PG-10, PG-200, PG-500, PG-800, and PG-1000) tend to sell for ridiculous prices give that they're just a handful of knobs and sliders.
