OK. I have "workaround" for this problem that I use on my XP desktop.
It involves using a feature of NTFS called "Juctions" (symbolic links under UNIX). This allows you to create a pointer on the filesystem to another place on the filesystem.
So in your Desktop directory you’ll create a pointer to your patch library.
The easiest way to do this is to download a program called Junction from sysinternals.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Junction.html
Unzip the archive and copy the Junction.exe program to C:\Windows\system32
The open a command prompt and change directory to your desktop folder.
Then run the following command:
junction <newpointer> <originalfolder>
junction G2Library D:\G2Library
Hope this works ok for you. It should Junctions are supported under Windows 2000.
I did try all the obvious things first like "Start in Directory", but none worked apart from this. |

Aha! Try this - when you get to the folder in the browser window that shows nothing inside, click on one of the tiny buttons in the upper right corner of the browser window. It's either the 'up arrow' button or the 'up & down arrows' button, I forget which, but this will magically show all of the contents of the folder! It's an old bug. On my system, it happens when I try to open sub-folders inside my main NM Patch folder. _________________ Dave Peck |

Its the "refresh" button. It looks like two arrows chasing each other in a circle. I have that bug in OSX.

another solution - PC |
 |
|
I know this is an ancient post but I thought I'd drop this info in for anyone looking through the older posts as I am this morning.
On a PC running anything from Windows 95 and up, you can specify the folder where any program looks by default. Right click on the shortcut and choose 'properties' from the context menu.
You will see a box called 'Start In'. Just put the path to your folder of patches in that box, apply and exit.
It's also worth noting that the editor is a standalone file, which is unusual for a windows program. It doesn't need to be installed and therefore doesn't scatter files all over your computer that it cant find later if you move it. You can have more than one copy of the editor on your computer and make more than one shortcut to these copies with useful names. You cant run more than one instance of the editor, but if you know you want to access a certain group of folders rather than another, just put another copy of the editor exe file somewhere (like in a patch folder..) and specify a different "start in" location. Sounds kind of silly, but might be useful for someone who hasnt thought of it.
The main point i was making was the "start in" folder box in the property sheet for the shortcut to the editor. Hope this helps someone.

On my system (XP sp2) this doesn't work, either with the full folder name or the 8.3 name. The editor always looks on the desktop for patches in the first instance. Shame, as I've been looking for a solution to this problem for a while. |
