Noise Artists
Is anyone here into purely noise artists? I've known about Merzbow for quite a while, but he was always just an interesting curiousity to me. But lately, I can't get enough of his art, and have been seeking out more like him. A few I've found so far are...

Hi There,
I was big into noise a few years ago. It was a fun scene, but I found that once I had seen the big names perform once or twice, it kind of started feeling redundant to me, and my interest started to wane.
At the time thought, I did manage to meet and see a show by a girl named Jessica Rylan, and I must say she was possibly the coolest girl I've ever met (well, in relation to noise music, that is). She creates pieces by singing though these crazy synths that she builds herself - How cool is that!
Anyways - here's her website in case you're interested:

Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma and Land of Lurches
Putrefier - Hypertension Classics Vol. 2
MB - Carcinosi and Armagedon
Mika Vainio (also of Pan Sonic) - Ydin
...some releases that come to mind that to me are not just "Noise" music (though they easily fit into the genre), but heavy pieces of electronic music.
I'm rather unfamiliar with noise, though I have heard (and enjoyed) Merzbow. Boredoms is a band of interest for those into "noise rock." I also really like John Zorn's project Naked City, which is a very chaotic, noisy free jazz/metal hybrid. I also enjoy Sun 0))), a doom/drone metal band that often treads the path of noise by using intense amounts of feedback.
there's actually a pretty good number of people doing noise in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. you should check out House Of Tinnitus in Denton for shows, they usually host any touring artists playing in Texas.
as for other noise artists to check out I'd suggest the following...
just a short list off the top of my head of some of the better projects... there are alot of people doing noise out there, and unfortunately alot of those are just pissing out release after release with little thought or effort being put into them.

But that's how any music scene operates, isn't it? There's a small collection of widely popular groups in the mainstream, an underground scene with a lot of prominent and experimental artists, then and a thin but vast coat of various obscure groups with nothing interesting to say.
Amy X Neuberg - One-woman electro-acoustic avant garde. Uses drum triggers and other live electronics along with singing and looping her voice.
Noveller - Solo noise guitarist, uses two guitars and an ebow. This is more on the ambient/textural side of the spectrum.
Lightning Bolt - duo of bassist and drummer, both insanely good (and just plain insane) at their respective instruments. The bassist is capable of creating very unbasslike noises while the drummer is probably capable of covering Venetian Snares songs.
Well, she's certainly not Merzbow-type noise as her singing is always beautiful but she does use a lot of noise in her songs, from what I have heard.
I can't remember the name of the particular song I'm thinking of of hers that is noisy, but it has lyrics about dying in a foxhole, and spoken word about (her?) everyday life.

I never thought of Amy X Neuberg as a noise artist.
Her CD is excellent -- and yes, has a hilarious track about her day to day routine that includes a rant about how folks misspell and mispronounce her name.
She uses some "found sounds" (she loops a toothbrush and it sounds a little like a brush cymbal in that context).

one of my favorite genres...
heh!
let's see...
you mentioned a few of my faves already.
here are are maybe a few you haven't heard yet:
Lou Reed - who started the whole thing with his "Machine" album
COIL - mainly their later material when it became very minimalistic
Foetus - early material
Einsturzende Neubauten - their real early stuff and one or two things later on
Caberet Voltaire - mainly their early material
Current 93
Keiji Heino
Richard Ramirez
Concrete Violin
T.E.F.
Organum
The New Blockaders
Prurient
Controlled Bleeding
not all of that is PowerNoiz like what you listed earlier but it is in the same vein.
my project that falls into this lot of trouble makers is Astrogenic Hallucinauting.
if you want places where you can get a lot of this stuff i can send ya links too.
it's fun to do a show with a distortion pedal, a feedback looper and a hammer! _________________

Another Noise Artist Here
i started doing noise almost 20 years ago, but have moved on from the abrasive style and into a more musical one.
What it was for me was the breaking down of all musical formats and creating an texture so abstract that the listener could pull their own unique experience out of it.
The problem is, when a piece becomes that abstract, there aren't any of the markers for the mind to remember anything (does that make any sense), so much of the noise being produced doesnt stick in the brain, and the piece esily forgotten.
For example, we had done a live show on the radio (atlanta). A week later, we were listening to the station, and we got all excited that they were replaying it. It turns out it wasnt us, and it was Merzbow (who we never heard of at the time). Still to this day, the early work sounds no different than Merzbow, and thats from the artist who created it!
i've always set out with the intent to create new styles of musick, but noise doesnt inspire change from my experience. Nowadays im all about thick textures that can be pull apart easily with the mind.
