Sounds of the planets Subject description: art and philosophy |

Do you e-m-ers ever check out NASA and the sounds that planets make?
The best I’ve ever heard is the one at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/pia07966.html which I originally found posted here, but there are several others at http://science.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/sppb/edu/lionroar/bullets.html .
Or for quicker access, http://science.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/sppb/edu/lionroar/roar9.html

Do you know of any others?
I sent the sounds of Saturn to my brother saying, "This sound clip is so much like some electronic music, that it is posted on electro-music.com's website.”
He responded by saying, “Similarity not surprising, they are both generated by radio-electronics. Since the "Musician" can completely control the output, it is not surprising that some will approximate naturally occurring radio emission. On the other hand, interesting sound for a planet. Think it serves the same function for celestial objects that whale songs do for whales?”
My response to that was, “Very interesting question, one that I had not considered before, so I have to take a while to think about it. But seeing as whales are intelligent beings, and no one has yet suggested that planets are thinking beings that interact, mate and breed, I'd say no. However, I would not be surprised if the radio transmissions serve some purpose such as possibly helping to establish their position in space in relation to other astral bodies, help maintain their orbit and help keep other "astral bodies" warned away, in that respect, yes.”
His response was, “Actually, people have suggested that suns, if not planets, may be intelligent beings. Several prominent S-F authors, although I cannot think of any off hand. Some have even suggested that they are "Gods".
"As for I, I think it unlikely, but conceivable that they are alive and intelligent. Certainly the energy is there, and the complexity. As for mating, not all live forms mate. Some procreate by parthenogenesis. Also, who is to say what is going on when galaxies collide? Could be the largest group sex orgy in the universe! <G>.”
I’d like to hear some of your thoughts on the sounds that planets make, other sounds in space and our comments on the above quotes. I wonder what the big bang sounded like? Are we still hearing it?
And to keep you company while listening to the sounds of planets, check out some of these photos...
