Last night whilst playing with the latest additions to my Lunetta machine for an hour or so, I started to realize further, what the different modules were good for and how, as well as which other modules I would like to have for which purposes. I thought a few minutes ago that I would post those descriptions.
I thought right now, that maybe this could be a knowledge database collective or something, to post what can be done with chips, all in one place. So here's me thoughts, thus farly.
CHIP: CD40106
CONTROLS: Frequency / Speed; ON / OFF switch
FUNCTIONS:
SPEED - within 20 to 20,000HZ: At these speeds, the 40106 oscillator can be used for manually playing:
- musical notes (with the ON/OFF switch)
- continuous musical frequencies
- changing pitch sound effects (with or without the ON/OFF switch)
SPEED - within lower than 0.01 to 40HZ: At these speeds, the 40106 oscillator can be used as the Clock for:
- all Shift Registers CD4015 dual 4 bit, CD4094 8 bit (will add others as I remember them)
- CD4051 1 to 8 / 8 to 1; CD4052 dual 1 to 4 / 4 to 1; CD4053 triple 1 to 2 / 2 to 1; CD4067 1 to 16 / 16 to 1 multiplexers
- all forms of Gates (dual, triple and quad AND, NAND, OR or NOR; XOR and XNOR)
- LEDs for use as speed and / or logic indicators
CHIP: CD4052
CONTROLS: 2 control bit inputs for choosing which of the 4 channels are INPUT or OUTPUT, for BOTH 1:4 or 4:1 multiplexers
FUNCTIONS: 2 sets of 1 input's direction to 1 of 4 outputs, OR 2 sets of 4 input's direction to the output
- The CD4052 is a dual multiplexer. A single set of 2 inputs will control which of the 4 input or output bits, are currently active. When I first read the datasheet for this chip I was pretty bummed out, by not being able to control the 2 multiplexers individually.
But then I realized a couple of advantages TO this limitation!
As Tom Bugs had done with his 4 step pattern generator, whilst you're having a constant voltage value input, sent to each of the 4 outputs of multiplexer #1, you can also have another constant voltage value output, to each of the 4 outputs of multiplexer #2, to individual LEDs! Ahhhh! That is a handy feature!
Then later I figured out that if you have the 4 outputs of multiplexer #1 each feeding to 1 side of a pot, and the center of the pot feeding to the 4 inputs of the 2nd multiplexer, you would have 4 sets of different pot values!! THAT would be useful for an LFO with either different LFO speeds or waveform shape on each step!
If the 2 control bits for the chip are fed randomly changing ON / OFF signals, then you could have an almost random repeating pattern, using this chip.
I currently have 1 module in my Deathlehem Machine set up this way. I've named it tentatively: The 4 Stage LFO. I'm going to build a 2nd one, to use for changing the waveshape of the LFO's output.
