Subject description: Is it possible to control FX pedals via MIDI?

I would like to be able to automate some of my guitar fx pedals via MIDI CCs. Although Moog and some other fx pedals have CV inputs, which enable MIDI automation fairly simply via a MIDI to CV converter, most guitar fx that offer control inputs use 'expression pedal' format and I believe this is different to regular CV format.

The most commonly used expression pedals, such as the ones made by Boss or M-Audio are, as far as I know, essential voltage dividers, so I would imagine that the format must be very similar in principle to that of standard CV.

Does anyone know if it is possible to convert MIDI CC messages into a format that is compatible with the expression pedal inputs that are often found on guitar fx?

Thanks.

I'm intrigued. I'm awaiting an 8-output MIDI to trigger device I recently won on eBay (hmm... looks like it might be home made....well, I can't afford Kenton products anyway) so I can trigger a group of ancient drum modules: Tama, Roland, Synare, etc. I have been able to do this already by using the individual outs of a Yamaha RX-11 drum machine, but because the output that's triggering the modules are the RX-11's PCM samples and not "pure" cv triggers, the output can sound a little sloppy (you can hear a bit of the sample coming through, if you have a really, really short decay).

Anyway, I'm not sure it would be a bad idea to try out a MIDI-to-trigger device just to see what happens. Of course, I could have this wrong - I'm using my setup for a simple note on-off function, but you're talking more like adjusting, say, the speed on a flanger pedal for example, right?

It's been a while since you posted this, so if you discovered something awesome, let me know!
