One reason I'm not in a mad rush to get one is it might not be fully ready for looping guitarists (and violinists) yet.

http://www.elektron.se/products/octatrack?section=faq

Q: I'm a guitarist. Will the Octatrack be a suitable looper for me?

A: Indeed. The Octatrack can function like a looper. The only difference is that it will be much more powerful than your average looping device. Dedicated looper machines will be implemented in coming OS updates.

http://elektron-users.com/forums.html?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=28&func=view&catid=9&id=103923

From the above link:

Hey,

I sent them a mail about it, and received an answer ! (Thanks elektron !) :

The mail :

> I am a very happy MDUW+ user.
> I am almost sure to buy an Octatrack on december the 13th.
> But just one question : i am a multi instrumentist livelooper. How
> does it work to record loops with a midi foot controler ?
Answer me,
> and you got a buyer for sure !

The answer :

"Hi there,

We will implement functionality to support MIDI foot controllers. Note that this might not
be available at launch. Most likely it will be implemented shortly afterwards
.

Jon
Elektron"

A musician far superior to myself in every aspect (guitar skills, skill in usage of effects processing and synthesis gear, composition, overall creativity) posed this question and got this answer:

dt / Q -
1) is there now, or will there be,
support for remote midi (or, otherwise dedicated) controls
of all functionalities, eg foot-controllers, etc?
this is key to those manipulating sounds/looping who are ALSO instrumentalists.

elektron / A -
1a) "That's the plan!"
1b) "The exact midi specs aren't completely set in stone, yet."

So Elektron is still not saying whether the support for remote MIDI controllers will be there in the batch of Octatracks flying out to respective customers such as ark. The support will probably get their via OS update eventually, but we don't know if its there today.

Yeah that's pretty long. :/

I'm having fun fiddling with the thing. I have a feeling that it can be used in a couple of different ways, especially since they have some pretty major features planned for upcoming OS releases.

The only MIDI thing I've tried so far is sending MIDI clock + transport to Ableton Live, which worked like a charm. There is a bunch of MIDI stuff planned for upcoming updates (presumably destined for the button marked "MIDI" which currently doesn't do anything at all when pushed).

I haven't payed any attention to how you control the Octa from the outside - that's probably not something that I'm personally going to want to do, but you never know.

Oh, there doesn't seem to be any MIDI over USB (not that I see on my Mac anyway) - so I had to use the MIDI ports on the unit.

/Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for info.

Looks like it isn't quite finished yet!

Mines in Glostrup now for some
strange reason.

We were warned of this (lack of support for remote MIDI controllers) as posted earlier. The Octatrack would still be very useful to me without it, but being able to start/stop recording via MIDI footpedal, so that I don't have to take my hands off my guitar or violin if I don't want to, would be a huge addition to its functionality.

Ah yes, just read your posts!

I must admit the ability to control by footpedal is what I need.

Maybe the midi control stuff will arrive at the same time as the midi sequencer

Ah yes forgot about pedals - I'll want that too.

In absence of this, there's a pretty cool feature I haven't seen before: you can set record trigs in the sequence, like standard groove box note/sample trigs. When a record trig is hit it records, so you don't have to press a button at the exact moment you want to start the recording, and it records a set amount of beats by default, so you don't have to stop the recording either. You can also use this to do weird granular echo effects.

Trouble is, I haven't figured out how to make the note trig disappear after it's recorded, so it keeps overwriting... I'm sure this is in there somewhere.

Almost a week longer than mine! Did you order directly from Elektron?

Yep direct from them.

It is still stuck in Denmark, maybe they then send it via Norway and Finland for the whole Scandinavian tour before it makes its way via Knarr to the UK Rolling Eyes

Hm weird. I messed up a bit with my address, so I had to go to UPS's storage center to get my package late friday evening. The storage center is right next to the airport, which in turn is pretty far away from any major town (including my own). This lead me to believe that UPS uses air transport, which shouldn't take 7 days hardly anywhere. Bummer.

/Stefan

I am hoping the UPS tracking info is just wrong.

It is now saying:

Scheduled Delivery Updated To:
Thursday, 01/27/2011, By End of Day

Last Location:
Departed - Glostrup, Denmark, Monday, 01/24/2011
Glostrup, Denmark 01/24/2011 2:30 P.M. Departure Scan
Glostrup, Denmark 01/22/2011 4:05 A.M. Arrival Scan
Molndal, Sweden 01/21/2011 9:10 P.M. Departure Scan
01/21/2011 6:25 P.M. Export Scan
01/21/2011 6:25 P.M. Origin Scan
Sweden 01/21/2011 9:45 A.M. Order Processed: Ready for UPS

Now I cannot see how it can have left DK at 2:30pm today when it is only 12:20!
