Minimal Modular Subject description: Need to start somewhere. |

I have an opportunity to get my hands on a fairly small doepfer rack (34hp wide) For reasonably cheap.
I'm having trouble though, convincing the greater powers to let me drop a significant amount on a modular system, so i figure i can sneak it through in modules of a few hundred each after the initial investment.
So what would you consider a minimal noise making setup that would keep me interested.
A homemade midi-cv converter should be homebrewable.
I like to build things (in a kit form mostly) and ive built myself a monome and sammichsid. so if theres any kit type options that will work with the doepfer format that would be great.
Infact i might even just ditch the doepfer side of it depending on this. |

Always hard to answer ... what would keep me interested ... couple of LFOs, VCAs, ADSR, oscillator, filter, ring modulator, Sample and hold ... some multiples to split stuff, and CV mixer or two. oh and a sloooooow random thingie of course!
Uh oh, its getting out of control .. well there is no such thing as too many LFOs or VCAs.
You can of course always do "what ifs" on a simulated modular, like the Clavia G2 demo. _________________ Jan

Hi Mr God
Have you considered a PAIA 9700 kit? Pretty damn great I think?

There's a lot of truth in that. The one thing that the MS20 suffered from, was a distinct lack of these. Probably as important as the actual oscillator itself. _________________ ACHTUNG!

yes, i think a lot of us have the same..er...issue. An empty rack is a good place to start, but beware of the MAS (module acquisition syndrome) which affects possibly 100% of all modular users. I started off with what i thought was enough, but am looking to ditch my present AS cases and..expand, but in a small way..I hope. I also have convinced myself that I need more randomness in the Beast (so more voltage weirdness generators), but I know its just an excuse to tinker and get bigger. oops.
But if the courier arrives when its only me who's at home, then all is cool |

If you're happy building things and can take a short step from kits to buying PCBs and buying components there are lots of people selling PCBs of loads of different modules.
For an all in start which you can expand on have a look at Ray Wilson's mini synth at Music From Outer Space. The patched out version might be a good place to begin and he has a good selection of decent modules.
Good luck with it all - as previous posters have mentioned it can become just a little addictive |

WARNING: SLIPPERY SLOPE!!!
Once you start... Well...
When you say "noise making" do you literally mean making noise, or do you mean making general synth sounds? I'm going to assume that you want to make some synth sounds...
A really basic analog synth will need at least one VCO and one VCA, and better, add a VCF, starting with a low pass. Then get two envelope (ADSR) modules, one for the VCA and one for the VCF. That will give you a single tone to play with. Since you've already made a Sammich, I'd suggest building a MIDIbox sequencer with one of the analog output modules, maybe the AOUT_NG. You'll be surprised what you can get with a sequencer attached to a single oscillator modular...
It's been a while since I updated it, but check out my modular web page (link in sig) for more info and some kit sources... _________________ Once you start down the modular path, forever will it dominate your destiny!

Multiples.... |

Am I the only person that uses the 1 in three out splitters you buy at radio shack for a few dollars because I don't want to ditch major cash and panel space on multiples? Most mults are just passive anyways, so there's no loss here.
So what that my splitters can handle stereo 1/8" headphones, they can handle mono just as well!

I have made some splitter cables too, that I use a lot. Many like stacking banana cables too. _________________ Antimon's Window

Cool!
For that matter you could use one of those little gadgets that's made to take one headphone out and make it into two headphone outs. My dad used to use that for me and my little sister to both watch T.V. without him and mom hearing it. Then you'd have a doubler. You could stack those on top of each other too.
I cannot imagine those costing more than 2 dollars each. Compared to how much for a mult. panel?
And you could get 1/4" ones for your MS-20 as well!
Another thing is that all this actually uses less wiring and makes less panel clutter than patching through Mults.
Bam, problem solved. Next? |
