Hi -
I'm building a new VCO for my system, and one of the things I'd like to do is include some sort of harmonic generator in the module. My intent is something along the lines of the Timbre generator in Buchla's complex waveform generator. I don't need it to sound like the Buchla, but being able to change timbre is a nice thing IMO.

I've been searching for candidates among the existing designs out there, and I'm frankly at a loss on which way to go. I find demo's of many of the units on youtube, but I've been a little underwhelmed at the variety of sounds created. Most of them just seem to add some buzzy quality to the tone. It's not clear to me if this is a result of Youtube's audio compression, or if this is just the way it really is.

Do any of you have strong opinions on the existing wavefolders out there? If you could only have one WF in your system, which would you choose and why ?

Thanks
Gary

I use Buchla stuff, so I don't have any stand-alone wave folders, but Ian Fritz' 5Pulser caught my ear, and seems quite simple:

Thanks. That's definitely one of the top contenders. I also wish I could find some sound samples of the Fritz Double Pulser, but have come up empty.

One thing that's been frustrating to me is the nature of many of the Demo videos. It seems like a lot of them are 37 modules with a wavefolder included. You just can't tell which module is responsible for which part of the sound.

There are sound samples of the 5Pulser in the DIY forum topic on the 5Pulser, maybe you could look perhaps here?

Thanks Rex -

I think the 5P may be worth a shot - it seems to pack a lot of punch for the cost.

One thing I've been thinking about trying is a combination of the 5P and the double pulser. There's a nifty little circuit we used to use back in my telecom days to interface to the high speed telephone digital telephone circuits.

What I'm considering is using a center tapped transformer, and run half of the 5P pulses into the top side of the transformer, and the other half into the bottom side. That should result in half the pulses going positive on the secondary while the others go negative. Might make for some interesting sounds.
