Racking, desktoping the G2. Subject description: Meaning putting the thing in a box! |

Greetings modular friends.
I have never been too happy with the keyboard action of the G2, mainly because I use it as my main desktop controller and it fails miserably playing acoustic sounds.
Recently I have thought it would be nice to buy a decent controller and put the G2 in a rackable enclosure, or making it a desktop module (with wooden side panels yay!). It's a pity Clavia didn't do that at the time like they did with the G1.
First step would be probably making an aluminium frontal panel with all the holes for the buttons, screens and all. I have never done anything like that but I know companies like http://www.frontpanelexpress.com can do panels with holes if a proper design is given.
Now for the real questions: How could I make a design of the front panel with the exact measures (Maybe asking Clavia)? Would anyone else be interested in a project like this?
Any advice on the matter would be appreciated! _________________ Cheers,

You can easily setup an adobe illustrator (and I'd expect more serious engineering packages like CAD, etc) to be 1:1 size.
I'd recommend measuring the actual size of the current panel, make a document that actual size, find a hi res image (fully front on) of the existing panel and place it inside it and scale it up to fit.
You work to a scale of say 50% as what you will need at the end is a vector drawing of the panel and when you scale a vector, it's just maths so it should stay correct.
If you take the transparency down to about 40% or less, lock that layer and then make a new layer on top and just start drawing circles for where all the holes need to be.
You can always keep track with a ruler that you aren't getting things off.
That's how I'd do it anyway. _________________ https://erstlaub.bandcamp.com

i don't understand why you are doing this. wouldn't it be easier to just use the existing G2 front panel & cut it down to size? why are you creating a new panel from scratch? |

Thanks for the tips erstlaub!

Well, there are at least 2 reasons!.
1) I don't like the colours of the actual G2 panel.
2) I want to maintain the original chassis untouched, so I can put the G2 inside of it again if needed. _________________ Cheers,

Hello Albert.
This looks like an interesting project
I would think that it might be worth a try to contact Clavia. Explain what you want to do and ask them if they would be so kind as to supply the manufacturing drawing that specifies the fabrication details of the front panel enclosure. It seems to me that there would not be any trade secret or sensitive intellectual property information that would be necessary to withhold on that one document. I think that you would also need the details of the placement and length of the standoffs which you would need for mounting the front panel PCB assembly.
Another thing… Although they never released a “G2 Rack” (with front panel displays/knobs/switches), I wonder if they ever built any prototype enclosures. If so, they might still have one they could supply to you. The concern then would be if your released G2 front panel PCB assembly would still mate with the prototype panel properly.
An issue that may be of concern is what happens when you disconnect the keyboard, mod wheel, and pitch stick. Will the G2 still boot without error messages and still function properly? I would suggest that you test that before going too much further.
I wish you good luck with this project if you decide to give it a go, and be sure to let us know how you come along. _________________ varice |

That would be great! I'd have definitely bought a G2 rack, if such a thing existed!
It would be much more easier in a live situation, if you don't actually need the keyboard. |

Ugh, this has been my dream.
The keyboard version of the G2 but with the keys cut off.
Would love to see if someone manages to do it some day.
I think something Buchlidian would be amazing - wooden sides, silver case, black screens with blue text and soft blue LED rings around the encoders. |

Hi and sorry for the lack of replies! At the moment I have put the project completely aside because of excess of work and lack of free time. I have yet to contact Clavia about the drawings of the front panel :/ _________________ Cheers,
