got a couple more new plants.

The hanging planter was looking a bit barren after trimming it back. I had already removed the Sanvitalia since there wasn't any life
left in it and now the Lobelia gave up as well. The amount of flowers it produced was ridiculous though so I understand if it was exhausted.
The two plants that are left are the Verbena (red) and Petunia/Calibrachoa (white) and the latter one lost a couple parts when I trimmed
everything back because it's a bit brittle. (and then another section today Rolling Eyes)

I had to visit the store today anyway for some other things so had a look at the plants to see if I could find anything to fill the gap.
I got some help again from a friendly bee which pointed me to a Scaevola. Not something I was familiar with but it seems that it's
an excellent choice. It flowers until late autumn, is trailing/cascading, likes sun and is drought tolerant, all perfect for a hanging planter.
Thanks bee!

It is an evergeen perennial but not cold hardy so probably won't survive, if it does than that's a nice bonus.

I also got a Physostegia virginiana. Already have one of those that I got early on in the year and it is still "alive" but just looks like a couple green sticks
with hardly any leaves. Not really expecting it to survive let alone produce any flowers. I got that one with the idea that it could be somewhat of a perennial
replacement for a foxglove as the flowers are a bit similar. The foxglove I got last month gave up shortly after flowering, so that spot was now available.

Another plant I got is a Daisy, probably a Shasta daisy or maybe an ox-eye daisy. Was considering getting one of those next year or maybe try to grow
it from seed but might as well get it now and see how it does on my balcony.

And another sedum for the alpine planter. One of the sedums got too leggy and grew mostly outside of the planter. I did try to replant parts of it but I am not
sure if any of those will root. It works fine in spring but with these constant high temperatures they tend to just dry out. The one I got will hopefully stay a bit
more compact and adds some extra color and variation.

a nice surprise today in the form of a flowering Calendula.

I got the seeds for it last year as a free gift when I placed an order at tuinjoop.com.
I couldn't think of a suitable spot last year but this year I planted the seeds in one of my hanging planters that has some sedum
growing in it among other things. I also added a couple buckwheat seeds and then waited.

The buckwheat has been flowering for a while now and I almost forgot about the Calendula until I spotted the flower this morning.
All 5 seeds appear to have germinated with 2 of them flowering so far. I think I'll order some more seeds for next year, they seem
like a nice alternative for Cosmos which I didn't have any luck with this year. I even managed to kill the one I bought within a week
Actually I might not even have to order them if I let them go to seed, just have to keep an eye on them so I know when to harvest.

Another surprise a week ago when I (finally!) spotted a butterfly on my balcony and a second one this week.
Couldn't get a good photo of it as it kept fluttering about and when it did sit still it was behind some flowers.
I think it's a Green-veined white which I haven't noticed before. I believe the large white (Pieris brassicae) and
small white (Pieris rapae) are more common around here.

The Bougainvillea is growing new flowers.

Interestingly the flowers themselves aren't actually pink but white, its kinda faking it by having pink bracts.
I also created a suitable space inside now in case I want to keep it through the winter as it isn't hardy. It won't be getting
a lot of sun there (only in the morning) but that might already be more than it is currently getting outside.

The Agastache is putting out lots of flowers right now which are very much appreciated by the bees.
Usually it's only one bee at a time though, sometimes two, and wasps are also appearing more now
which I am less fond of, but they're welcome as long as they stay outside.

I know it's a dwarf but I do think it is supposed to be a bit taller.
Not that I mind, and I am happy that it is flowering.

I have a Buddleja Razz

If you want to attract butterflies then a Buddleja is of course the plant, it's called the butterfly bush after all.
However, they can get big, very big, way too big for my tiny balcony. Luckily there are also dwarf varieties which can
still get large but are a lot more manageable. I've looked online and did consider maybe ordering one somewhere in
the future.

I needed a couple of things from my usual store again, incl. at least 1 plant, and while I was there I had a look at the
buddlejas which, not surprisingly, had also caught the attention of a nice butterfly (not sure if it was a red admiral or
a small tortoiseshell). Of course they were too large but on close inspection I spotted one hiding between the others
that had a lower price tag and a different label. A label that indicated a height of only 80~100cm, so I quickly grabbed
that one and took it home. It is indeed a dwarf and there is some info about it on this german website https://summer-kids.de/
The one I have is called Timmi so should have dark blue flowers. It did have some spend/dried flowers on it which I removed
but also new one which have yet to bloom.

Another plant that is a bit of a butterfly magnet is Verbena bonariensis. I already had it on my list of plants that I wanted to look
for next year but since they had one available that didn't look too bad (probably in better shape than it would be early next year)
I got that one as well. It did sustain a bit of damage on the way home and lost some flower buds but it has a couple more and plenty
of new shoots that may still produce flowers this year.

Also got another Goldenrod (Solidago), at least I am 99% sure that's what it is but it didn't have a label. I say another because
I do already have a dwarf variety but that one hasn't shown any indication of wanting to flower and has now started to drop its lower leaves.
This new one is covered in flower buds and looks like it is ready to burst open very soon. I have no idea if it is also a dwarf or just forced
into flower at a low height, if I can keep it alive until next year we might find out (they can get pretty tall). Goldenrod is also loved by butterflies.

What I set out to get was not any plant in particular but something to fill a gap left by a couple of marigolds in the large railing planter.
I was hoping for something pink and an annual that will flower into autumn but other than that just looked at what was available, which
isn't a lot at this time of year. Something stood out though, it's definitely pink and it's a Callistephus chinensis, which I wasn't familiar with.

I also took home a white Heather (Calluna vulgaris), mainly because it was pretty cheap and it's a bit different than all the other plants.

I think that in mom's garden verbena attracted even more butterflies than the budleja's ... although more is pretty relative .. there were not very many this year .. and mostly white ones . .a couple of small brown ones .. saw one blue one.

Another attractor she has is koninginnekruid .. Eupatorium cannabinum .. but those get petty big too ... when anther 90cm plant is an option .. maybe Eupatorium 'Baby Joe' (Leverkruid)?

And they all look nice and smell good Smile

A trick might be to cut the top out before they blossom .. they may branch out then and produce more flowers ... Chelsea chop it seems to be called .. for making the chelsea flower show more spectacular .. I guess.

And on the other end of the spectrum .. I love corsican mint .. Mentha requienii, had some in a flower pot here .. unfortunately not for very long Sad

Ow and another nice insect attractor is Chinese bieslook (Allium ramosum) .. with white flowers .. starting to blossom about now .. not very big .. and very eddable too .. as a substitute for garlic or spring onions .. they seem to take ages though to grow from seeds .. maybe they need a bit of winter.

And that heather is nice Smile

I think I've seen more butterflies than the last couple of years or maybe I am just paying more attention to them, but yeah, mostly white ones.
Now that I think about it, I can't remember the last time I saw a yellow one (citroentje) which used to be pretty common.

I've added Eupatorium to the list, could indeed be suitable. Taller plants aren't so much a problem (to a certain degree of course) and I have been focusing
more on those this year. The main difficulty is finding plants that are tall but not very wide as I don't have much surface area. I think verbena can get
wider at the top but doesn't have a lot of foliage and most of it is at the base, so that should work out ok as it can mingle with other plants.
I also added Achillea (duizendblad) to the list, also great for bees & butterflies and I like the colors of the 'Terracotta' one.

The Chelsea chop is not very suitable for me because as you already mentioned it makes the plants branch out more and thus they become wider. For some
plants it can still be beneficial though as they might fall over if they get too tall but I usually have to stake a lot of them already anyway. Btw it's just called
Chelsea chop as an easy reminder for when to do it, because of course every (UK) gardener knows when that takes place (personally I don't care for it at all).

Somehow I never made the connection between chives (bieslook) and Allium which is actually pretty obvious. I do like the taste of it but I am not sure if I
have a suitable spot for it. Also makes sense that they can take some time to grow from seed since they form tiny bulbs which takes a lot of energy.
But once established they can come back year after year and the flowers are nice.

thanks Dave Smile
It usually turns into a sea of green at this time of the year but I managed to keep some color going.
There might be even more color soon if the Solidago and Buddleja come into bloom and maybe some flowers on the Verbena as well.

The Alpine planter also still has some color in the form of tiny flowers on the Delosperma, which is getting a bit too comfortable in there.

Oh and also the morning glories, at least the ones that self seeded. The ones I've sown had pale looking leaves and caught a bad case
of spider mites. I did remove a lot of the infected leaves and it does seem to grow some healthier looking ones now. I hope it'll still flower
regardless.

Heh .. my mom got a spontaneous Euphorbia lathyris and then came up with the idea of having a green garden Cool

It certainly looks nice, and even when you can hardly see the flowers - it does attract insects.

And the fruits indeed more or less look like peas (but maybe do not put on your reading glasses) Smile
