This Circuit was a little offshoot from another project that I've been working on. It occurred to me that it would be easy to modify part of my other circuit to make a TR808 style cowbell, which as you may know doesn't really sound like a real cowbell but is still much beloved ( or in some cases loathed! ) this is similarly constructed using 2 square wave oscillators & 2 parallel VCA's

The one important difference with this version is that the 2 oscillators can be tuned over an approximately 3 & 1/2 Octave range.

The Jfet buffer could be replaced with a jfet input opamp wired as a buffer ( I.e. the output connected to the inverting (-) input. ) For example TL071/2/4, TL081/2/4, LF351/3, newer more expensive parts could be used but would be overkill IMO.

Well, I played with it and also used the VCA part already and it works extremely well, with digital signals. The plus in buffers and voltage/current smoothing is totally worth it. You can totally skip D3 because the diode would be just double because of the transistor, but you will need it when you plan to add a attack pot. The position of D4 could be also changed. I used a similar vca in a kinetic art-installation. I added a buffer, which is crucial if you want to add filters and stuff to the output.
