I stole the heading from a little item in British muso magazine "Guitar Buyer." Apparently, Factory Records co-founder and Art Director Peter Saville has been hired to make an "artitic statement" to coincide with the London Launch of a new Sony product line. He's made lots of cardboard cut-outs of guitars to be placed around London, and whoever finds them is encouraged to take them home. From what I could gather, the act of stealing a cut-out is part of the artistic statement. Genius! Hail the Master

Hmmm, I don't think it counts as "stealing" for me. I think it's more like they are being handed out here.

To me the topic for discussion here is how the distribution model can be a part of a work. I think that for me to accept something as a part of a work it has to come from the artist so I'd accept Peter's encouragement to take them as a part of that work, but not some persons theft of work X as a part of work X.

"theft" is a nice, strong word to get attention but I don't think this topic needs it.

I bow to your ever superior knowledge. I quoted from a magazine headline, as I stated at the beginning of my first post in this thread, but If I have transgressed I'm sorry!

Superior knowledge is realy a strech; I read the article you linked to (which didn't mention "theft" and took it as a interesting way of semi-anonimous handing out.

Quote:

Work by NEW ORDER’s sleeve designer is set to appear all over LONDON – and fans can take it home for free.

Around 500 guitar cut outs designed by Peter Saville will be left across the capital to promote the launch of new hand-held game and music consol the Sony PSP, and they can be taken home by those who find them.

No theft there in my book.

Anyway, to me all of New Order's design pales in comparrison to his work on "unkown pleasures" for Joy Division -to me-. In fact as luck would have it I'm wearing the shirt right now.

In my first post, and it's there for you to read if you're willing to expose yourself to it: I quoted from "Guitar Buyer," NOT "New Musical Express."
