What's in a name? |

I play to please myself. I most enjoy the creative process. But it's also nice to have other people hear my music. So I try not to alienate my potential audience too much.
The name AEJOTZ is a bit confusing for some but I like it and it fits what I'm doing. It might attract as much interest as it deters. We'll see.
Another obstacle and/or inducement is the titles of individual pieces. A "bad" title will assure that your piece is overlooked, whereas a "cool" title will get even the worst song clicked on.
I've uploaded 16 pieces to electro-music.com and observed how quickly or slowly they were downloaded. Only 28 people have downloaded "univac" but 150 people have downloaded "inferno." And "univac" has been on the site nine days longer! "Inferno" was also the most rapidly DLed tune to date.
Apparently more people were interested in hellish themes than in geeky retro computer references.
Another slow performer has been "gigue" which is named for a baroque era dance beat. Can you say "obscure?" Actually, "obscure" would probably have been a better performing title!
None of this is very important but I thought it was interesting. _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

I agree that track names are very important - I go through a lot of grief trying to find ones that I like and that point out something interesting about the music.
Most of my favourite names that I've used are scientific jargon based on Greek, or failing that, Latin. And for some reason I really have a thing against function words like 'the' and 'of', or indeed any grammar at all in the name. Just a single word is ideal for me. When I've had an idea for a piece of music, I have been known to delay composing it for a couple of months while I overload my brain reading scientific articles on Wikipedia etc. looking for new words - I absolutely have to have the name first!
Just listened to Univac - the name appealed to me straight away because I knew it was a computer, not a vacuum cleaner... Cool stuff - you're giving me future-nostalgia too. Now I feel an overwhelming need to listen to Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express on my way into work this morning!

I would have gone straight to "univac", but then again, I'm a Big Frakkin' Misfit!

I like it! You should keep coming up with these off-beat names and never mind what people think.

Ditto. I have a title I need to write for - Data Bitch. Now I'm thinking there's a composition that needs to be titled DECVAX. _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |
