... or will the Nord Modular Editor 3.03 run patches on its own, without a hardware synth plugged in? Thanks!

Nope, you will need either the real thing or the G2 demo software.

The demo SW is a bit old tho and may not run everywhere (OS X especially .. maybe with WINE) ... it seems to work under win10 here though.

Last time I checked it was still in a nord modular legacy section on the Nord site.

It got reorganized I guess? ... http://rolandkuit.com/ has his face alright ... with a self signed security certificate for the https version ofthe same site ... so there may be some issues.
