it makes perfect sense if all you do is midi-related stuff and do not to work with audio.

Maybe you could give Pure Data a try since it's free and similar to Max.
Of course you might want to upgrade Max to Max/MSP at a later stage. In that case, go Max.

I have started many a project with MSP, but always ended up doing things with Max only. This of course implies you have software / hardware that allows to be commandeered via Max.

All those wonderful mathematics you can expose your MIDI information to. Lovely.

Max by itself existed for a long time. it is worth it by itself, for the control it gives you. really...
