Opinions for CGS wave multiplier build |

OK, so the Wave multipler can be built in any manner of configurations, of which I have seen several. I would like to hear some opinions on what to include. It will be going into a mutated serge style panel with many other goodies, and economy of space is a must. What do the grinder and lockhart have to offer me?? I have heard lots of samples and most seem to neglect both. Also, it will be bananas, so the external offset and its switching jack may be a stinker. what delights am I missing if it is omitted?? |

Hi,
I made one of these not long ago (though it's still on a cardboard front panel). The three drone samples below should give an idea of the Lockhart folder and the Grinder. Both are swept manually. I had a bit of a space problem too, so I've put in a switch for AC or DC input for the Lockhart. Otherwise, everything else is there. If I had to make the choice, I'd lose the Lockhart, purely because the Grinder is more interesting to my ears. And who wouldn't want the word 'GRINDER' emblazoned on the front of their modular?
As for the switching jack for the external offset... you'd lose some modulation capabilities, to be sure. I'm kind of at a loss as to a solution, sorry...

I disagree! I think the Lockhart is as equally cool as the Grinder.
I used almost everything here except the AC Lockhart input and the three inputs that Ken labels as "optional". So almost everything seemed to fit in a reasonable amount of space:

Got out my shoehorn and cardboard mock up panel, and fit the whole damn thing in! Even room for a switch to hopefully handle the function from the offset cv jack.
For those who have built this module already, I am pretty clear on what is happening with all the jacks and pots. BUT I am trying figure out whats going on with that offset jack. There must be a way to mimic it with a physical switch. I cant quite figure out what connection is being defeated when the jack is occupied. The schematic does not show anything to reflect the wiring diagram. PLEASE HELP!!!

EOFS is the PCB connection for an jack socket providing nothing but an 2nd triangle input (external offset=2nd triange input).
OFS is the PCB connection where the offset pot is fed in... (BTW i added attenuators for both tri inputs).

I will also be adding pots for all of the inputs. My concern lies on the wiring diagram, the offset input jack is a 3 circuit ( I am using bananas), with the switch connected to one of the +R pads. Apparently this is something witha 1k resistor to keep the +15 supply from going backwards out the jack to whatever is on the other end. I am just trying to figure out how to achieve this without the jack. I suppose I can dump the ext input and just use the manual offset, but I want as much VC modulation as possible. I will keep on racking the old brain. |

Okay...
The pot has two functions in Ken's wiring; to modulate the incoming 15 volts (when no jack is present) or to modulate the cv signal (when jack is present).
Take a single throw switch. Connect the middle pole to your pot (purple one on Ken's wiring diagram). This is where the signal is going to. Now one side of the switch is connected to +R (the 15 volts through the 1K resistor) and the opposite pole to your banana jack terminal. If you set it up like this, all you have to do is remember to flip the switch if you plug in a jack. I hope this is clear, otherwise say so...
Looks like I got outvoted on the Grinder/Lockhart question... |

Exactly! For me, it's important to have both the capability of starting with an initial value and a means to control the amount of modulation applied to the initial value. IMO, the external offset input is indispensible.
I bought the board on the first run, so there was no Lockhart on it. I use the Grinder on occassion, it's handy for modifying noise signals and the output of the WM itself, but I'd love to have a Lockhart on it, too. A few years ago I rigged a Lockhart up with a simple Vactrol based VCA in front of it and an offset control and input - I was really impressed with it. I intend to work it into a module one of these days.
