that kind of stuff-trainers with heaps of logic modules and other low-level stuff. what would i need to look out for, patching these through a modular? would it work at all?

Not sure sure what you want and/or expect ...

What could kill connected equipment is out of specs voltages on it's inputs. On old modulars gate inputs sometimes have restricted levels 0 .. 5 V, for other inputs a range from -10 to +10 V is usually safe. The kit has the tools to make sure of signal levels.

It's just that I wonder what it would add to a modular system .. in itself.

I see this as a (self) teaching tool, this might of course result in circuits of interest for a synth, and as such I can see use for hooking it up to a synth. I'd expect people to rebuild a found circuit into a more permanant module like thing to be incorporated in the synth then/afterwards.

This moght cost quite some money, but it looks like a useful tool to learn about electronics. It depends a bit on the quality of the instruction material that comes with it.

well, i'm looking for low-level stuff, like logic gates, flipflops, comparators basically all the small stuff that the g2 has. also, having low-level components seems just dead sexy.

i'm a tinkerer at heart, even though i know nothing about anything.

i'm not expecting some crazed sound generators, but more stuff where i can implement little weird kinks and stimulate my imagination.

and, some of these used kits tend to be cheaper, like waaaay cheaper. you might find a kit with 20 logic gates/6 flipflops/etc. for less than 50 bux. if they worked, it'd be a really easy way to put logic into a modular.

I used to had a big logic one with some other interesting stuff in it.
Like a comparator etc it was a ces ed-lab one.

so it worked with modular stuff pretty well?

Ok, the 2nd link seemed to point to something more analog in nature.

With using logic circuits in a synth you have to take care not to blow the logic's inputs as well. this depends on the logic family used. CMOS circuits could be useful as they could have a supply voltage of 15 Vollt. You'd probably want some protection circuits to make sure that they never see less than zero or more than 15 V in their inputs. For other families the max voltage could be 5 V, not as practical for a modular system.

I looked at some of the logic kits, but could not find what family was used.

Are you sure you don't want to do some soldering yourself ? It wouldn't be too hard ... pick some interesting CMOS gates solder them on perf board together with some protection then add a bunch of of connectors and off you go.

well,

i would love to, but 1. i'm totally without any understanding of electricity and 2. i don't have a place to solder. i don't wanna do it in my small apartment, because our ventilation isnt up to snuff.

Yeah, maybe jamos (jim johnson) will stop by but I know he used the ED Labs with his banana-jacked modulars. I've heard that they do work. The Comdyna stuff looks particularly nice, (and works with modulars) but the GP-6 is no longer made.

The CES Ed-Lab's look cool, though!
