PREFUSE 73 (WARP)
PREFUSE 73 is the alias of Scott Herren, an experimental hip-hop producer whose material often features MCs buried in the mix to become more a part of the sonic texture than a focal point. His first record under the Prefuse name, Vocal Studies And Uprock Narratives, not only buried but cut up and spliced raps as well as allowing some more straightforward vocals from several MCs. The 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, carried on in a similar vein. That same year, Warp released Extinguished: Outtakes -- a fascinating EP of beats and samples that ran through 23 tracks in about 35 minutes.
Surrounded by Silence, the proper successor to One Word Extinguisher, was released in March of 2005, featuring collaborations with rappers Ghostface and Aesop Rock, plus Blonde Redhead and EL-P. Three months later, an EP of recordings made with the band the Books appeared, titled Reads the Books. The next Prefuse record, 2006's Security Screenings, was relatively collaboration-free; it featured only two guests, Four Tet's Kieran Hebden and Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio.
Back with new album Preparations, to be released on Warp Records in 2007, Herren has managed to refine his sound again with a water-tight set of masterfully composed instrumental tracks.
FINGATHING (GRAND CENTRAL)
FINGATHING are a two piece live and recording outfit consisting of scratch wizard Peter Parker on turntables and Sneaky on Double Bass.
Peter Parker (aka Dan Baxter) was discovered by Mark Rae of Grand Central records, when judging the 1997 DMC Mixing Championships - where he came second in the UK finals - and it wasn’t long before he became a fully fledged member of the Grand Central turntable squad. As those who have witnessed him will bear testament, his live shows are both awesome and awe-inspiring. His pure technical displays using classic 70s break beats and underground hip-hop have hypnotised many crowds and gained him many fans. He is also a member of the Cutting Crew along with Statik and ex-DMC World Champion DJ Noize.
Sneaky is a classically trained Double Bassist. He attained Grade 8 with distinction in 1992 and went on to further his musical education by taking a BTEC (Oldham College) and a BA (Hons) in Popular Music and Recording (Salford University). ‘I started playing double bass 20 years ago, the cello when I was 5. My parents are classically trained musicians so I grew up in a very musical house’, explains Sneaky, a well known face on the Manchester music scene having established himself as resident at nights such as Eardrum at Kaleida before it’s move across Oldham Street to the infamous Dry Bar. His work ethic is exemplified by his continued desire to juggle his FINGATHING workload and session work with countless Jazz outings alongside many of the UK’s luminary talents.
Live double bass and cut up beats with beats complimented by Chris Drury's animated visual mastery is not to be missed.
BEANS (ANTIPOP CONSORTIUM / WARP)
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the wonderful world of BEANS, aka Mr. Ballbeam. Hip-hop rebel. Wordsmith extraordinaire. Sonic architect. Fashion renegade. Published poet. Culture star. Raised in White Plains, NY and first picked up on in the mid-90's as part of the mythic Soup / Boom Poetic collective, the word began to spread. Having achieved his widest acclaim as one-third of the legendary NYC progressive rap crew, Anti Pop Consortium, BEANS continues his grand experiments in music and life with releases on Warp and Thirsty Ear. With lyrical virtuosity, vanguard production that straight bangers, and one of the most unique and remarkable live performances around, BEANS harkens back to the glory days when all it seemed to take was real talent, real passion and the desire to actually be real and simply shine. Having shared stages and toured with everyone from Radiohead to Vernon Reid, Prefuse 73, Ratatat, Dabrye, Bill Laswell, The Rapture to Tortoise, The Locust, Battles to DJ Krush, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch to Aesop Rock, DJ Shadow to Cannibal Ox, Attica Blues to Terranova, plus Coachella and DJ gigs at The Guggenheim and with Missy Elliott. BEANS has displayed his multitudinous skills and the response has been astounding.
Having first made a solo imprint with Nude Paper, his 12-inch release on Mo'wax in 2000, BEANS gave us a taste of things to come. All this seems destined to redefine the word "fresh". The latest arsenal in his assault on the senses is BEANS new album entitled, Thorns; straightforward and emotional in content yet more textured and dense in production. |
