Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this problem ......

I recently bought an Antares AVP-1 vocal producer, to use in my live rig (rackmounted). The problem that I'm facing is that this unit draws power using a wall-wart power adapter, whereas all of the rest of my gear in the rack have their own built-in power supply, and so neatly plug straight into a power conditioner (which is convenient).

Ideally, I'd like the AVP-1 to draw it's power from the power conditioner too. I know very little about electronics so this might be a dumb question, but is there anywhere that can provide a similar wall wart AC adapter to the one I am using but with a IEC 'kettle lead' end?

Thanks!

There are all sorts of power supplies, and although most manufacturers will void your warranty for using a different power supply, sometimes their power supplies are insufficient. I have been in this position many times.

So take this advice as advice only, if you blow up your unit making a bad choice, don't blame me, ok?

That said, Most kit's power inputs display a rating, expressed in volts and amps, (or watts), plus an indication of the current type (AC or DC), and if DC, the polarity of the connector (usually "(+)" or "(-)").

Since a lot of the kit I buy comes from the USA and their little 115V wall warts generally start fires if you plug them into 240V, I try to find matching supplies. And I hate wall warts anyway.

There are plenty of power supplies that will take a figure-of-eight mains lead, there are even more with IEC 3 connectors. You need to shop around. At issues is the output (what you feed the thing needing power with).

So for example, Moogerfoogers want 9VDC, (+). Moog doesn't bother to specify the power requirement beyond that, so I use 9VA power supplies (1 amp, 9V) to power them, it's probably overkill, but the power supply can always supply less, it just doesn't like to supply more than it can use.

My Poly Evolver wants 15VDC @ 1300ma (+), so a 2 amp voltage selectable PSU seems to do the trick. I set the selectable voltage to 15 Wink

Anyway, I go to my local mail order electronics shop to find non-wall-wart power supplies.

Is this clear enough? It's not really scary if you know the requirements of your gear, and that's usually printed on the back.
