I like the idea that you could use a counter as a sort of burst that would stop itself.

I adapted this from Thomas henry's 'drum cookbook' - I havnt tested it yet - I don't quite know how it works yet. possibly some things need to be removed and changed as it may be too slow. you could probably do it with other counters - this one gives a good range though of 1 to 63 repetitions.
