Peavey Mk2 16 channel mixer Subject description: Keep or strip? |
 |
|
I picked up this mixer a couple of days ago for AU$70.
There's 50+ 6.5mm sockets on the back, so even just for those, they make $70+ alone. Add to that 130+ knobs, the pots they're sitting on, 19 sliders, a nice +/- PSU, etc. etc. and I think it was a good deal.
What I'd like to check here is whether it's a nice mixer to keep.
I mean a 16 channel mixer is not to be sniffed at when you're looking at setting up a modular synth is it?
Although it's definitely not rack mountable (bit of a beast)
But I know Peavey generally aren't too shabby.
What is the general concensous? Keep, or strip?
I'm about 90% strip unless someone comes up with some good reason to keep it. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

If it is clean sounding, and the pots aren't scratchy. If you have a valid use for it as a mixer, and it works well for that use...keep it and use it as a mixer.
If it is going to sit around and take up space as a door stop, or is just being held on to because you might some day use it...s t r i p.
At least that is becomming my approach to the subject. |

I downloaded the manual, and couldn't believe my eyes when I read a section which had words to the effect of: -
"If nothing is plugged into the Effects Send socket the effects bus is routed to the internal spring reverb"
And sure enough, I got it open and there's a whopping big spring reverb tank bolted to the case bottom!
Can't complain about that! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

And,......
The main reason I wanted to strip it was to make my own mini patchbay using the piles of send/receive sockets on the 16 channels. I just got them out, and they're all switchcraft sockets!
Also, sitting on the balanced inputs (16) there are 16 * BA-143 balancing transformers, all in metal cans. IIRC these are quite expensive aren't they? I'm not sure what I'd use them for though.
And the 3 * LED VU meters are all on separate sub boards. 12 LEDs each, with one 4way connector for Gnd,+ve,-ve,signal in. They could be handy too.
Very nice quality pots (some may be dodgy though), and 137 of those classic old Peavey knobs in blue, grey, white, and black.
Oh, and all the chips (4558, 355 mostly) are socketed. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

| Wow, can those balanced transformers be used in reverse? I've always wanted balanced sends on my Nord G2. |
