Where/how to trade files? Subject description: Asking about places to upload/download mp3 for collaboration projects |
 |
|
Hi All-
How do you trade files for collaborative projects? I'm starting on such a project and am having no luck emailing .mp3s back and forth. Is there a server or service for this somewhere? Can we put files on the electro-music somewhere?
Thanks,
Steve C |

There are file sharing services aroundthat you could use, but when you have (or one of the people you are working with has) a fixed IP address you could also consider to install an FTP server (like FileZilla) at a spare computer.
Of course you can also attach mp3 files to messages here but you probably do not want the files to be public and you might run out of disk quota soon (20 MB default, but that could be set larger).
You do seem to have a fixed IP address BTW. _________________ Jan

How about Gmail? There's a limit at about 10MB per file but you get gigabytes of storage.
You could use tags in the message's body to be able to search your whole archive. _________________ Kassen |

Surely there must be sites for this sort of thing. If not, it would be a nice addition to my site, perhaps. I do write Perl CGI or have done so, but do not know how to write a simple file exchange CGI script. Unless there are legal issues, I would host it. Just thinking out loud, which I may regret... |

Would it be possible to modify the interface of this site so you could upload files that only certain users could see, for the purpose of collaborations? How much of a tweak would that be?
I don't mean to sound unfriendly keeping these files private, I'd rather keep the files under wraps until we're done with the mix. I do know other people have posted files that people can modify and then submit pieces, such as this one by Chris Mann:

Steve,
we could try to set up a little something by using built in forum features and then see how it works out for you & your co-workers. I'm thinking of a new sub forum that would only be visible to a selected group of people, something like that. Or a new sub forum that is visible to all, with some stuff under it only usable by selected people, that would give a sort of a public meta channel as well, and this thread would probably be the first to be moved into it.

That's a great idea. I hate to be the "5th wheel" here, but, I really think that a well thought e-collaboration forum would be good.
As far as the quota on here goes, an intelligent solution may be to simply have another site as the carrier for the MP3, or wave or whatever. There are hordes of free host sites available. I know of one that allows 10Gb of space like the one Kassen mentioned but for MP3's only-music web town. I'm pretty sure it charges you if you would want to make the playlist private though. The key would be to find a more private host that would host WAV files, I mean, ideally only for WAV heads like me I suppose.
Someone could make a post, with a description of their proposed project and wait to get a serious response and then go from there. Then, go from there as far as file transference goes.
The only problem with just like "posting a drumtrack" and saying like "sombody put some sounds on this" would be, you know, if you didn't like something you would just have to be like "oh my, this sucks, I'm sorry, this won't do", to random people who were just trying to have fun, or help you out or whatever.
I honestly think, the creation of a forum for this would be enough, let alone holding everybody's hands making sure they know how to send each other files. Even if this was limited to people who know how, it would still be quite a significant thing to do.
I'm assuming you have already thought of everything I said but just in case you didn't...there you go.

Steve, I can recommend http://www.musicwebtown.com.
It's very simple, and to the point...unlike my posts ...
Your member name is your url (musicwebtown.com/(blank)). You get 10 Gig space to make MP3 play-lists, which you can post in any HTML. You can put up to 100 MP3's on each play-list, up to 40MB per file. While playing, you right click the song's name on the playlist to download it. It is very confusing, though, because it will download the currently playing song, no matter what song you click. But other than that, it's pretty good-I've found that it loads much faster than other common play-list formats, which is a plus.
Good luck,
