Hi there,
I have the G2 demo on my computer and have messed around with it and checked this forum and all links, plus online G2 patches I could find for G2 Modular. I bought a Access Virus TI but is was a very tough choice between the Virus and Clavia Nord G2X keyboard. I originally set my heart on a G2x modular - but could find one anywhere from any online shops. I choose the Access due to the 5 octave keyboard and the fear that I might not be able to use the Clavia Nord Modular G2 - plus I just could not handle the idea of a small octave keyboard.

Anyway, I would be very grateful If someone could give me some advice. I want to know if you need to be an expert to use the G2 and if you have to spend many hours - even once you've got good programming skills to create your own patches. Can you use the Clavia nord Modular G2 with an external sequencer like Cubase? I've read on the internet that Clavia Nord modular is a great place to learn all about synthesis. By the way does anyone know if there any G2x's still out there - I cannot understand why Clavia would stop making them.

I'm very interested in synthesis, sound design and playing keyboards and I would say I have moderate level of understanding - I've learnt a lot from using the G2 demo. In fact I've used it more than my virus apart from when my computer did not work and I could only use my virus keyboard.

Thanks.

You definitely don't need to be an Expert to use one, I am not an expert but my G2 is used loads.

The best thing about the G2 for me is that it is a great learning tool, there are quite a few experts here posting patches so there is lots of material to learn from. Also this is a good community so people are always willing to help.

The G2 is a great buy, the possibilities from it are huge.

Cheers

Andy

Thanks for the replies - greatly appreciated.

Tried to see if I could get hold of the Clavia Nord Modular G2x keyboard - I've searched everywhere - no luck at all. Does anyone know of anywhere I could find one - I'm not sure I could handle the small range of a G2 - one of the main reason I hesitated to buy it. Saw it advertised at www.music-house.com - I'm sure the website must be out of date as the G2x has been discontinued. I'm from the UK so I could only get a G2x from Europe not the States.

By the way how do other people find the G2's keyboard?

A couple of questions -

Do you need a midi cable as well as a usb to use the Nord Modular g2/g2x - I read somewhere that you did.

Would the speakers and microphone I have withe The Access Virus TI work with G2/G2x?

Do sequencer modules allow you enter note values by pressing notes on a keyboard or do you have to use a mouse to enter note values?

Lastly a fun question - does anyone have a complex patch and a description of it - including pictures ot it - I'd love to see how complex a patch can get on a G2.

Surely out of date, because that site is already for sale Smile

The G2X has a semi-weighted keyboard, so it plays a little heavier then the G2 (besides being expanded already, 5 octaves, goose neck microphone and two extra Wheels)

USB to handle the Patches, Midi to handle Midi notes and CC's

I'm not sure, but is there any reason they shouldn't?

The NoteSequencer is capable to handle both ways.

They can be very complex... Up to 800% when you make internal connections between all 4 Slots using bus-bars and Midi modules... In short: hard to show in one picture Smile Take a look in the archive and search for the author Blue Hell...

Hello,
Thanks for your responses. Does anyone know where the best place or method to get hold of a Clavia Nord Modular G2x?

Where is the best places to start to learn about (all the modules in the manual) the Nord Modular G2 - is the Wizoo book on the Nord Modular any good?

Is There a simple method to convert Nord Modular patches to Nord Modular G2 patches?

Thanks again.

For checking out patches, try installing the proper editor (not the demo) and opening patches there. Although you won't be able to play them, you can still have a look at all those modules and cables. Check out the noodle section here for extra fun stuff. Smile

qfingers has put some excellent work into making a conversion tool - do a search for posts from that ID. It won't convert everything exactly, because the old and new modulars have some fundamental differences.

For tutorials, check out Rob's workshops - that's a sticky I think, either here or in the main Nord Modular section.

/Stefan

You're already on this website, what more could you ask for?
I don't think there is any better resource on the planet for all things Nord Modular.

The Wizoo book is OK, but is for the original Nord Modular, not the G2. However, many synthesis concepts still apply to the G2.

I think there are much better resources here, for both Nord Modulars.

There are enough patches and tutorials to keep you busy for a long time.

Hello again,
A quick question is if buy the rack version of the nord modular g2 will I need to buy additional things like midi and usb cables. As explained before I have an Access Virus TI will it work from the Access TI keyboard? I just could not face the 3 octave kekboard.

Thanks for all your answers to my questions

The G2 Engine should come with a USB cable, but not a midi cable.

If you're talking about just playing notes from the Access Keyboard,
The G2 midi implementation is complete enough that it should work from every midi keyboard on the market that complies with the midi spec.

CC's and other midi messages should work as well. Midi has been around too long and it's not often that one finds one device not working well with others.

Mine didn't, but I know that some people found a nice red USB cable in the box.
