Radio 101 invites you to contribute sound works, spoken work and location
recordings.
What is Radio101?
Radio 101 is a radio station that will make a single 7 1/2 hr FM broadcast
(and webcast) on the 4th of October this year. The station will broadcast
for the duration of the fatal voyage of the R101 airship that took place
on October 4th 1930. Destined for Karachi the airship came down after 7
1/2 hours at Allonne, near Beauvais in France.
Why Radio101?
Radio101 has been inspired by the different sorts of transmissions that
took place - a BBC radio broadcast in honor of the flight on the 4th Oct
1930 which played music for the passengers after dinner entertainment; the
communications from airship control; and the psychic
communications from beyond the grave in the days after the airship
crashed.
Radio101 seeks audio work, spoken word or location recordings broadly
responding to the following themes, ideas and places:
Airships (old and contemporary) see http://www.aht.ndirect.co.uk/
Empire, Imperial airways and travel (pre passenger aeroplane flights)
Air disasters (R101, Hindenburg etc)
Successful airship travel (eg R100 to Montreal)
Bedford / Cardington - site of the Royal Airship Works
Ismailia, Egypt / Karachi, Pakistan (then India and part of British
Empire) - destinations of the R101 flight
Allonne, nr. Beauvais / France – crash site
Psychic communication, Spiritualism, voices of the dead see
http://www.euro-tongil.org/swedish/english/er101.htm
1920s and 30s dance band music (Radio101 has a collection of music that
could be remixed/ sampled)
- more aspects of research and audio material given on request.
