One of the things on my "to do list" is working out performance skills for capturing and processing instrument+room feedback enabled via mic'ing an acoustic instrument. This all started with trying to control room feedback through an over-sensitive mic that feeds my banjo playing into a software delay & feedback set of FX. There are two forms of feedback in this system, room feedback through the mic and software feedback in the -- high wet-to-dry, multistage with feedback -- signal processing chains.
In the process of trying to eliminate the effects of the room feedback, I was using expressions pedals to adjust wet/dry and software feedback so I could take the FX to the edge of resonance with the room without going into oscillations. The expression pedal settings are different for each room and instrument and mic, so you pretty much have to "ring out the room" before playing, to see the points in the pedals where oscillation sets in.
In practicing this, I soon discovered that I could capture the room feedback of instrument, and loop it through the software FX. At this point I am "playing the room" as an additional part of my acoustic instrument.
Sadly, I haven't had enough time to practice this enough to integrate it into a performance. As I say, it's on my to do list, which just keeps growing. _________________ When the stream is deep

Keep in mind that once you get 5 people in the room it will all change. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Yep. That's why it's on expression pedals. I got to practice setting this up a little before my performance at em2008, but no time to improvise anything during the performance. I did play with it a little in the jam room, but ran out of time there, too. Busy weekend! _________________ When the stream is deep

Of course any acoustic instrument can be modulated into an electronic sound.
On the other hand, I consider the sound of some acoustic objects as is, as 'an electronic sound', because of the properties.
Fill a whistling kettle with a bit of water, and hit the bottom of the kettle with a stick, while turning its angle..
So I think both is possible. Making 'acoustical' music with el. equipment, or makin el. music with acoustical tools. _________________ 0.618033988 |
