Talking about the red lady 16 Subject description: how to make a broad and wide Saw sound |
 |
|
There is always the question how to make a broad and wide Saw sound.
In this kinds of sounds, which are sometimes called 'fat', a lot of oscillators producing different kind of Saw waves, of course detuned.
How to sound as many oscillators possible? Each Voice has two Oscillators, which can be detuned. To emphase this effect, the Unison cab be enabled. When using the sound in Mono mode Unison provides 4 detuned Voices. Octave Shift together with the SemiTone knob can be used to widen the sound in a single Slot.
And last but not least all these features can be used in a 4 Slot Layer or in a Performance.
To blend the detuning in the sound a Low Pass Filter can be used and turned down more or less. Mostly I program to one of the Slots, I prefer the highest pitched, a slight Glide.
When using the Poly mode to de-activate (to silence) one Slot results in a Voice extra.
Detuning (hear example 05) is realized by Morphing.

Pseudo-Additive synthese and Hammond 2 |
 |
|
As an example Clavia's Performance H7 (at least, at the NordLead2).
In the pictures the green signal is Osc1 and the red one is Osc2.
The first three illustrations are made without LFO modulation, the last one the total sound.
In the sound examples the first three are cross mixed between Osc1 and Osc2, again the last one is the complete sound with 'Leslie' modulation.
When tweaking the settings it's important to know what harmonics are made in each Slot. As far as I can reconstruct (Maybe someone else would look at it too) the first two harmonics together with the lowest note is made in Slot A; the next three in Slot B and the last three in Slot C. Mostly they are divided into a complex sound (pulse) and a single triangle. Again, the OscMix creates the balance in amplitude between the three, so does Resonance. The balance between the three groups is done by the AmpGain.
Also is added a tweaked H7 organ sound, using some Frequency Modulation and Distortion, in a *.mid file.

Control able Blips and Blobs |
 |
|
The next Program makes it possible to create control able short sounds, in a nice way
First the AmpEnv is set to a short Decay, so when holding the key there will sound a short pitched tone, but when played in pizzicato technique the Decay is skipped and the rather long Release will make the tone much longer. The 'echo' effect is made by LFO1 [Pulse to Osc1+2]
When played using a higher Velocity (assigned to FilterVelocity) the harmonic content will change, also due to the Resonance)
Using the Wheel the Morph will change some settings. First the Arpeggiator, which was original set to 0 to create only one note, is set to a 7 times Echo.
The Resonance is set almost to max, so the Filter will create a much more pitched like sound. The FilterEnv Decay is also set to max, so it will fall slowly.
The falling Pitch is made by the Echo setting of the Arpeggiator, because all echo's are made using a decreasing Velocity (special feature of the Echo). This explains the small melodic line when using Morph, a high Velocity and the pizzicato technique.
In the audio example there are eight sounds:
1 low Velocity - hold
2 high Velocity - hold
3 low Velocity - pizz
4 high Velocity - pizz
And using the Wheel=Morph
5 low Velocity - hold
6 high Velocity - hold
7 low Velocity - pizz
8 high Velocity - pizz
(Sorry for the low 22kH mp3...)

Jumping around in Mono |
 |
|
A special playing technique is using the Poly-Mono-Legato switch while holding one key. The note will not react completely to the new setting as long as it is kept in hold: in the example the Unison will react to the Mono setting (4 Voices instead of 2), but allows a second note to be played on the keyboard, although it has to be Mono. When playing a second melody the Arpeggiator will give the suggestion as jumping around the leading Voice.
Example Osc2 continuous Bass: Osc2 no KeyboardTrack and a Pulse Width modulation [83] to the Pitch. At the end of each melodic phrase the mode is set to Poly and back to Mono again.

I knew about this, just never known you've done it Way to go dude! I've tried the Wave keys and felt those were better than the Nord Lead. Have you tried them? |

Hi,
my 1st post here. Love my NL2 rack and want to get in deeper. So i started reading your RedLady pages Wout. But why is the link Patterns/LFO not working? Is it just me and my browser (fifo3) or something else?
Keep up your great work!

BlackRack
Because I'm still writing on it
In fact I just added some info to it yesterday, but still not a complete story yet.
And there is a long 'to-do' list also...
But ask what ever you want to ask!
