Nord Lead 1 Multitimbral Capabilities |
 |
|
So Im looking to connect the Nord Lead 1 into an mpc and record midi data to sequences. Ive read the Lead 1 is only 1 part multitimbral so does that mean it is not possible to record different programs?
Basically Im wondering if its possible to record a program ito the mpc, change to a different program in the Nord and record it while the original program stays intact and go back to it and record with it.
Any insight? |

The NordLead(1) is in it's most elementary a 4 Part 4 Voice synth, which means every Slot can be seen as a single synthesizer, only capable to produce 1 Voice. Not very interesting making music
Using an extension board delivers 8 more Voices, so a total of 4 x 3 = 12 Voices. Wich is only true using NO Unison. Remember the design was made in the beginning of of the 1990's! If there is the possibility to insert a PCMCIA card, the expansion is installed.
Recording Midi is only possible when playing it on a keyboard version. The Rack only sends Midi CC and the Midi Notes of the Arpeggiator, when trigered!
Every Slot can send on a different Midi channel, so you can make Program Changes.

Cool thanks on the welcome. I planned on grabbing up the Lead 1 Keyboard

So basically you could play up to three keys at a time on any of the four slots.
When you say "Unison", do you mean stacking slots to make a program that would more than one voice at a time on a single key?

So when you use unison it disables the chance to use 3 voices in a slot at a time?

Is the slot "physically" open on all keyboards and then becomes usable after the expansion is installed?

So if you werent using a unison program you could send each slot to a seperate midi channel over to the mpc and play up to 3 voices at a time?
Thanks for the help!!! |

Just for a good understanding!!!!
The Keyboard send all data, for sure! If you want 49 Notes at once and you sequencer will record this, only... It can't 'sound' 49 Notes... Only 12, if the extension is installed, otherwise only 4! if just one Slot is active. If you are using an unextended NordLead1 you have 4 totally mono synths!
I use the synth sometimes without the extension, just for fun to beat the limitations
Unison is also a sound parameter, only it use two Voices for one Note, so it will divide your polyphony by two! An unextended 4 Slot sound using Unison results in only 2 Notes! An extension is vital these days...
But the NordLead Keys has those beautiful cut corners!!! Wow, I always feel a shock when I see one in reality )

cool thanks for the reply...
Ive been eyeing a lead 1 on ebay but I want to make sure its actually expanded because sometimes ebay sellers like to bend the truth a little in their listings.
I know the E shows up when you boot it up if its expanded but
is the expansion slot in the back "physically" open on all keyboards and then becomes usable after the expansion is installed?
Or is that a part of the expansion installation process? |

When installed there is a smaller slit to put the card in and a little square button to unlock the card when ejecting the card.
When buying on e-bay just ask which cards are also delivered. If none the synth is probably not expanded. Write Clavia if there are some expansions left (there were a bunch a year ago)

Yes, those corners are a really great finishing touch. Too bad those weren't made on subsequent versions |
