ok, well i use FL studio, i have no hardware yet and basically im just a beginner, i always make music when im bored at home, and some of them sound decent. But i need to spruce them up with juiciness because as i listen to professionally made tracks i feel like my music is too dry and too simple... Can anyone give me any advice on how to make the beat juicy and full of sounds. Also can you guys tell me what consists of house music, like the beginning, middle, and end and each part that needs to be in the song.

best thing to do is find a producer to work with, someone who is already involved and can actually show you things hands on because there's a limit to what you can be shown/told online.

what is your musical experience so far?
what type of house music?

regardless of that, it will take you a very very long time, if not to master writing the music, then certainly to produce it to a decent quality.

you will need to read books, read manuals, reverse engineer fl projects (if you do decide to stick with this tool) and a lot of experimenting. it will all take time, possibly years to get even the basics going... again, depending on your experience.

i am learning this, too. a few hints i worked out so far (that seem to be working):

- use bandpass filtering to limit parts of the track to certain frequencies
- eq the living shit out of every part
- use very subtle compression on each track; perhaps use more than one instance of very subtle compression instead of a moderate one
- cut out frequencies on the master bus (below ~35hz and above 15k)

to do:

- buy 20 grand worth of equipment Laughing
- pester everybody and their dog with several mixes and DEMAND their feedback

i have no clue if thats what the pros do, but the tracks sound better since i applied these. its my 2nd month that i make music (again), so it is to be taken with a grain* of salt

*- a ton

I've read this in a couple of places - what does it mean more precisely? What should I do with the EQ that I don't do with the bandpass filter?

i just fiddle around with it til it sounds good. may still suck, since i dont have any good headphones/monitors. what i do is just make a very narrow eq - example: a stab ive put between 500 and 2000 hz will get 3 or 4 parametric eqs INBETWEEN 500-2000 hz. i use the reaeq/fir for this, its just "bigger" than the ableton live eqs (gets a bit fiddly with those small window). works really great if you dont use notched presets etc.

although i don't share Abreaktor's philosophy or practical techniques, i do acknowledge that "fiddling around" and focussing on sound with disregard to conventional technique is important.

in broad sweeps, i'd follow this path to production enlightenment:
1. learn to fiddle around with stuff and note how fiddling with different knobs affects the sound
2. learn everything technical you possibly can and try to achieve your effects and music on purpose and deliberately
3. forget step 2 and goto =>part 1.

continue this cycle until you finally do something that you acknowledge as worthy of your efforts. you'll know when you've got there and no one else's opinion will matter a hoot*.

* well... maybe just a little hoot, but by then you'll know whose opinions are worth the ask.

wow I havn't posted in a long time but hey, I lost my job and I might as well Razz

Gotta go with Stanley, fiddling around is key. In doing this, you'll not only learn the ropes, but you'll get your own style hacked out too. You could follow some books and whatnot that you can find online or in book stores, but then you'll probably end up a clone... which may or may not work for you

as for abreaktor, sure it might work sometimes to follow those rules, but without good headphones/monitors you really can't tell how a track is going to sound in your car, on a laptop, in the club, on a boombox, etc.... or at least its going to be way more difficult. If you've got the frequency output readings nailed you can.. but whats the fun in guessing?

Somehow it looks like stealth marketing when someone claiming to be from the USA posts stuff like this through a provider in India ... especially when other replies of poster go no further than "nice" and "google it".
