Experience with CURETRONIC modules ? |
 |
|
Hi all,
I have a mostly-DOTCOM format modular and I have recently learned about CURETRONIC modules:
http://www.curetronic.com/curetrbau/curetr/index.htm
These are Moog / Dotcom format modules, although it appears that the power connector is different and the power requirement may be too (15V vs. 12V ?)
But anyway I'm interested in their C-303 multimode filter, which is based on the cool Steiner Parker Synthacon filter. Have any of you had experience dealing with this company, or any first-hand experience with their modules? I'm located in USA so I would be especially interested in hearing from anyone else in the states who has purchased from Curetronic. Thanks! _________________ Dave Peck |

Hello Dave,
i have some Curetronic and i know Matthias well from phoning.
I have not the steiner filter, but i know that vereybody is loving it. As i do with my Yusynth steiner.
Matthias who runs Curetronic is a nice guy, but he's more into phoning then mailing.
I think he speaks really only a littlebit english, so in this case mailing might be better.
Problems with delivery times occoured in the past with orders for Cabinets which he get from outside or with repairs.
sometimes with modules when i had no Faceplates which where be done by a Friend of him
There where two people who had to wait and got promesies till it was then sent out finally.
But never such storys like reported concernig COTK or PlanB.
the envelopes are linear. they have a overall Time Pot which is just great !
But overall timeadjustment is more suited for longer stuff.
VCAs are linear too
The VCOs have the best Sawwave i know for Acidlike sounds.
Pulse is also ver very fat. just a tiny bit behind my anyware VCOs which are from the core Minimoogclones.
( this is now proofed as somebody has reverseengineered those anyware VCOs to draw a schematic .)
for FM; you can forget the Curetronic VCOs IMHO.
they are stable, specified tracking is aropund 5 Octaves, but i got once one VCO moreless up to seven Octaves.
Trimming is more fiddly then on other VCOs.
populated boards are available for very cheap !!! around 65€ i think
........................................
the 12db, VCRes Filter is a moogclone. I did comparisons with the Q150 lader from dotcom.
They sounded exactly the same having the Q150 in 12db mode and when used static.
With modulations the Dotcom was shining, the curetronic not really.
concerning the Curetronic steiner:
Olivier Gerber from switzerland was taking his one with a modification.
you can have an additional pot that is into the feedback path.
This seems to be a very great option
..............................................................................
Matthias/Curetronic changed the Faceplates and also teh manufacturer,
the old problems where allways based on not having the parts.
I know he got once a huge delivery of faceplates.
so just ask if he has the modules in stock, or what would be deliverytimes.
If it is in stock you really have not to fear anything !!
..........................................................................
Power:
the modules run with 15V power. this is within the module regulated down to 12V which is good for saving from crosstalking,
thats why for example don't recomend to run some of the modules directly on 12V.
Usually the powerconnector is a doepfer style, but it is posssible to solder the Dotcom connector into the pads ( which i did)
I think Matthias will do this on request.
Only thing to be aware is:
Dotcom has a 5V suply.
this comes then to a pad that is connected to Ground on the doepferpads.
so one should cut this traces on the board, or remove that pin on the Header.
( i was back then not aware of this, but it caused no problems. i used the QPS2 from dotcom )
( cutting the traces within the connectors pads will be not easy as this is one big groundplane ) |

if you like to get modules and Matthias would not have connectors,
i could send him some. Those are nomore available here and one must get them from mouser.
He was allways very nice to me, so it would be a pleasure to help out.
I have male and female parts, so making a small adaptercable would be another choice |

Hi Funky40,
Thanks for the information! Do you have any more details about this mod that adds a pot to the filter feedback circuit? What does it do?
Also, the Dotcom power supply provides +15, -15, and +5 VDC so it is compatable with the Curetronics modules, it only requires a connector change, or you can use a little adapter cable that Curetronic provides (I saw a picture of this on their site) so the power situation looks good.
I emailed them last week with some questions about availability and ordering instructions but I have not heard from them yet....... _________________ Dave Peck |

A follow up - I just received a reply from Curetronics with info about their European distributor. I've contacted the distributor to double-check that the filter and the power adapter cable are both in stock. _________________ Dave Peck |

thats no mod actually.
there is already a trim pot on the backside of this module to adjust the brutality of the filter.
i have a few curetronic modules and i like them a lot.

I was contacted by Curetronic and told to order modules from their german distributor (Schneidersladen), but when I tried to order the module from the distributor's web site it calculated the shipping charge at well over 100 Euros. I notified Curetronic and said I'd try again iin the future if they get a U.S. distributor or find a cheaper way to ship from Germany. _________________ Dave Peck |
