Recommended PSU Subject description: Which PSU to start with? |
 |
|
Hi,
I'm starting my DIY modular experience with some CGS kits. I was told a PSU ordered from Curetronic would do the trick, but I've sent an order in several times without reply now.
Which PSU would you recommend for somebody starting with a relatively small setup? (currently a CGS VCO, Tube VCA, VCF and Dual LFO)
I'm looking for a built solution. Soldering these modules is one thing, not getting electrocuted while not understanding how to make a PSU is another.
Thanks in advance

my personal advice is to buy either two external, linear (not switching!) +15V or +12V power
supplies, which are able to provide at least 500mA, 1A is better
another option is to buy a AC converter which delivers 15 or 12v ac, you can then build the ac to dc converter yourself (see ray's wall wart power supply for schematics http://www.musicfromouterspace.com), both versions are safe
In my relatively small modular setup (2 vco, 2 filter, 2lfo's, 2 envelopes, s/h..) is use two external 12V/1A linear power supplies which work great!
Just remember that stable power supply is very important on a analog synth! |

I use PowerOne dual output linear supplies, like their HBB15-1.5-AG (adjustable between 12 and 15 volts, 1.5 amps). they are easy to come by surplus or on eb*y, cheap. either the CGS or MFOS boards are fine, but by the time i source the transformer and all the parts it's not much cheaper. having solid, clean power is a good thing.

why no switched PSUs ?
was there not a thread in the main DIY section where some geeks ( statemachine? ) stated that modern switching PSUIs will do the job ?
whats the advantage of lienar PSUs ?
are those little boards from CGS giving a linear PSU ? |

Also check out Blacet's ps500 power supply- it has 6 connectors for modules built in. You could also get their PSCONN board for a further 9 connectors, or one of Ken's MOTM distro pcb's.
