Akai s2000 with zip disc Subject description: using a zip disc with akai s2000 |

Hello
I bought an Akai s2000 from ebay to use as a sampler in my setup. I also bought an scsi zip disc (100mb) to store samples on.
I have a number of questions.
1. How can i get samples onto the zip disc using an old windows 98 pc. I have tried adisc but it only seems to work with floppies. Plus I have a copy of mesa but when I try to import the wav files it doesn't do anything. I have already coverted some wav files into 's' files on a sound editor, so if I can use these somehow it would be good.
2. I have tried to connect the zip disc up to the S2000 and format a disc (so that I could record the samples through the analogue points and save them on the discs), but whenever I go through the options to format a hard drive, the sampler freezes and I have to turn it off as the buttons don't work. I have tried putting a terminator onto the zip disc but it still will not work. Also I have tried changing the scsi ID to 7 and other numbers. I know the zip disc works because I have connected it to the old 98 pc before hand.
Please can someone help me, as I am at my wits end.

Hi there. Sounds like you've tried all the stuff I would have. You know the S2000 uses a proprietary filesystem, so you won't be able to mount it under windows, you'll need to use mesa or akaidisk to read/write the zips. Also, you're sure it's a scsi zip drive? it has the scsi symbol, not a printer icon by the connector on the back? and you're connecting it to a scsi card on your PC? Sounds like you tried different termination options. You can try different scsi ids on the zip drive, but you have to set the scsi id the sampler will connect to, somewhere in the global menu. There's also an option to set the scsi ID of the sampler which has to be different. You can also try hooking the sampler right up to your scsi card on the pc and see if mesa recognizes it that way. I have an S2000 which I've used with a scsi hard drive, never spent much time getting it working with a computer though, I just do my recording and editing in the S2000 which can be painful, but you get used to it. Hope that helps. |

Hi Fengland
Thanks for getting back to me. I think I have found the problem now. It looks like me Zip Disc is the wrong one, It has a printer symbol on the back. Plus I have found a list on the net of Zip Disc models and mine appears to be a 'Parallel 25pin' model. When I bought it from ebay I thought that 'parallel' & 'scsi' were the same. doh!
I'll have a look for a cheap scsi zip on ebay again.
I did realise that the file system needs to be different, which is why I was going to use mesa or adisc. I'll have to do some more research on this, to see if I can get one of them to wok with a zip disc.
Thanks again. |
